Yes, one cool thing about that figure is the headsculpt, but in production they didn’t manage to give him eyelashes, which looks weird. I suspect the helmet was too close to the eyes for accuracy, so they left them off. Or it was just a mistake. I remember these peg-warning and I never bought one until this year. I had to add one last picture with that head, and although you can’t tell, he has eyelashes now.

I see, more inexperience with ME figures at work on my end. I may have to grab one of those.

Thank you good sir. I wish I had an ounce of your skill at dioramas
Thank you Yeet. The original upper legs on Whirly SS also had that pattern, too, but brighter. |

Thank you for returning to this thread Mr Hebime, and for the kind comment. That Storm Shadow was a great concept but the final aesthetic took losses that enabled the quirky functionality I suspect. My next entry will hopefully save another figure from a similar loss, if all goes well.

Some great work in this thread! The Baroness (the head sculpt looks fantastic!), movie version Rip-Cord (that actually looks more like an updated Stalker in his Tundra outfit), and Storm Shadow all look great! Keep 'em coming, bro!

Wes Burt’s Zartan artwork was based on the Zartan character from GI Joe Renegades cartoon. I assume Hasbro wanted more realistic details from which to produce an action figure since the cartoon drawing was naturally outline-heavy and lacking surface detail. At some point it was decided that this figure needed light-up eyes for playability. Even in ‘84 Zartan had a unique play feature with color-changing skin, so I guess unique play features are Zartan’s thing. I hope the light-up eyes delighted some kids for a while in 2013. Of course you had to insert a flashlight into the top of his head to get it to work. He wasn’t released in the 30th anniversary / Renegades line, as might have been intended, but was a leftover for the Retaliation line, during a period when Hasbro felt it was okay to reduce articulation, so his ankles were stiff and his knees were single jointed. Careful examination of his wrists makes me wonder if originally there was going to be articulation there as well.
Taking Retaliation Zartan “back to concept” gave me a chance to change some things: 1) removed the conspicuous rectangular hole in the hood (the one for lighting up the eyes) 2) replaced the unpainted grumpy old man face and 3) added articulation to the ankles and a double knee joint. The 2013 toy was meant to show the moment that glowing eyes reveal his evil intent with the light-up play feature; The concept art on the other hand obscures his gaze a little more within the cowl. #5.
