(WIPS below)
Thanks for all the kind feedback. Splicing the boots onto the leg was a critical part of this project. this was a first for me, and I've personally never seen it done before. Here's the technique I used, for anyone interested: With a single edge razor blade (not in the handle so I can more easily see that it's level) I slowly & carefully cut off the MTF boot cleanly. I then stood the boot next to the HACKS blank on a level surface so I could use the same razor blade to mark the HACKS leg for first cuts. During this process it's critical to keep the blade level, resting it squarely on the boot to get the correct height on the HACKS leg. I then carefully and slowly flayed the lower HACKS legs, as shown in the picture below. I cut through the thinned portion of the legs about 8mm(?) lower than the uncarved part to create a peg which would insert into the boot. In the boot I then dremeled / carved a peg hole for the leg to go into. The dremel bit helped get it started, but a small rounded chisel/knife from a wood carving set was extremely helpful to achieve a cylindrical peg hole. I also used ~1cm(?) segments of paperclip like rebar rods to strengthen the connection, inserted into holes made by a thumbtack. Tested the fit for accuracy along the way of course, before using superglue. Epoxy might have been necessary if I'd accidentally made the peg hole too big, but it was snug. Here are pics: Flayed HACKS legs next to boots: Pegs semi-inserted: Boot side-peg holes can have preserved functionality, but you may need to dremel them in a little deeper, OR rather my choice was to cut the knife sheath peg shorter, and glue it to the boot: A word of caution, if you're going to try cutting parts like this - always follow the RULE OF (NON-BLEEDING) THUMB: whenever possible, gently and slowly rock plastic onto blade (rather than blade into plastic) with minimum necessary force, as slowly as you can tolerate, in a distraction-free environment. Your fingers will (usually) thank you. <EDIT>: Tools: Approximate cutting depth (orange) and location of the paperclips (yellow) Last edited by ARBCO Avenue; 06-17-2019 at 08:31 PM.. |

So would I be correct in assuming eventually you cut the BFS legs off at the ankles? How high did you have to go to allow for the MTF ankle peg? This is a really cool solution.
