A quick tribute to the 25th Anniversary Wave 1 carded figures--the infamous and/or effective Repaint Wave--using updated later figure molds. Back then this opened my eyes to effective head and webgear swapping as well as painting to get more from less molds.
Wouldn't mind getting this as a 5 pack if offered these days, and no new tooling costs... 2020-04-05_03-05-32 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Stormy's cast red accessories were painted a darker red. I hate the look of normal red cast parts. |

I would buy that 5-pack in a heartbeat if I found it on the store shelf in 2020. It would be like 2007 all over again.

Dig it! The figures look great together in that photo. Only one detail you left out: Snake-Eyes came with Timber in that first wave, either grey or black, depending when you found the figure... The 5-pack would have to have SE's mascot!

GENERAL HAWK
This one is more of a fix than a true custom—and probably only a slight fix to many. Still I wanted to include this in this wave and in this thread, to get some thoughts down and get photos for my archives… Hawk is in my top five all time Joes, likely due to his enduring presence in most of Hama’s comic run. Back in ‘86 it was nice to see Hasbro upgrade one of its original (and discontinued) characters/figures both visually AND in rank. Technically, Hawk had always outranked Duke and Flint based on filecards and comics, but the General moniker and the ironic bomber jacket and helmet probably help sell this concept to kids brought in by the cartoon. Personally, I don’t have too much of a preference to his OG13 look (with the right mods to the 25th fig) or the 84 look, so I like to have both on my limited display shelf space. I’m glad that the ‘86 look was chosen as an early 25th figure, but would have liked to have seen him included in the first 3 waves of 2007 as part of the initial 25 figures (in place of Shipwreck to have had my top 10 Joes in the 2007 series). 20200411_002150~3 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Legs: ROC Sgt Stone V2; Hands: 50th Flint Rest: 25th General Hawk (carded version) Notes (the small tweaks): Cut out a little of the front upper arm to improve elbow bending range, to at/above 90 degrees. I may be able to more later, as I continue to study the construction of newer JoyToy figures and Star Wars Black Series—both of which have amazing bending range without the use of double joints. Painted the jacket to fix continuing discoloration—originally just Testors Leather, but then added Citadel Black Wash unwiped to darken and weather. Changed the hands to add the ball joints (T13 guys get all the premium upgrades). Found that even though the Flint hands were originally painted as gloves, they lack glove sculpting detail and can be used for bare hands. Hands could go smaller (might try 50th Firefly), but not as large as bare MTF male hands. Changed the legs. Not so much that I didn’t like the original legs, but didn’t love them—camo paint sparse and not spaced well, thighs make pants look a little tight, boots are a little too high. Moreso, I had these Sgt Stone legs left over from my Shipwreck custom, I really liked the paint pattern (maybe not realistic but still a nice visually look) and didn’t want them to go to waste. Later down the line, I may go back to the original legs if the purist in me takes over. 2020-04-10_09-55-05 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr IMPROVED THE NECK—the most visually offensive part of the Hasbro release that really killed this figure. When the collar is removed (by heating with hair dryer), the head on the neck actually looks fine. It’s the holster straps in addition to the collar that wipe out any neck length. I fixed this by carving and filing in grooves at the torso top shoulders for the holster straps, stretched those straps across the chest to thin them out, sanded out some of the back shirt collar and glued the collar back down tight. Then added a slight amount of sculpting clay into the head socket to raise the head. The end result is a more visually commanding posture and presence previously lacking. 2020-04-10_09-57-41 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Above are some behind the scenes progression of the neck (for minutia enthusiasts): LEFT: Initially just tried to raise the head is clay in head socket, but I think it made the neck look to long close up. Removing the collar would prove that (wish I had a pic to show that). Additionally, the tan shirt made it look longer. I had him this way for years, but only recently bothered by it with more up close pics. MID: tried to keep with raised head only, but repainting the shirt to green (like the original art and Sideshow fig), and painting the shirt collar to look higher. Looked better but still off (paint too far off the sculpted collar, chin to top of arms too high) RGT: cut the holster strap grooves in, cut down the back shirt collar, glued collar down tighter at back. Still painted collar higher than collar sculpt but not as much. Still raised head with clay, but not nearly as much as the other two tries. 2020-04-10_09-56-51 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr My five '86 style Hawks. I wish I could get more of the 2005 Comic Pack Gen Hawk to use that head in more Hawk customs. If any castors offer this head, let me know. For the 2008 5-pack version, I tried an alternate head using Falcon head and Dusty helmet and googles. I thought the size of the head+helmet+google was too big for this figure, so stuck with the original 25th head and helmet for my final. Also for the 2008 5-pack version pictured, the same neck fix was done (I initially tested out the work on this 5-pack figure). Left vintage figure has the head replaced for the blonde hair I always wanted for the ’86 figure. I went ahead and repainted the collars as well. I didn’t paint my final 25th Hawk blonde because I needed the eyebrows dark (see Hasbro painted prototype’s blonde eyebrows above). 2020-04-10_09-55-45 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr For this series I dubbed Wave 2 months ago, I wanted to recreate the card art as I had been doing for previous figures of this thread. But I knew the poses of Hawk and Tunnel Rat would give me fits. Hawk turned out…ok, but not great. As nice as the articulation is on modern figures, some poses like this require more—like double neck and butterfly joints. I still haven’t figured out Tunnel Rat and may have to look at alternative art for basis for that guy. 20200411_211532~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Here are my updated versions of the characters included in the second Joe 5-pack box. My Scarlett thing in my O13 thread really got me on this kick lately. I use my new standard Lady Jaye here which is not a cartoon-based version like in the box. This reminds me that Hasbro missed out on making a cartoon-colored version of Flint for this box. And this time, for Snake Eyes I remembered to include a Timber (and Polly too)! Finally, for this shot I wanted to stay with the vanilla poses for my own archival purposes (also for figure height comparisons//compatibilty). I know they’ve got raised arms in the original display box, and tried that, going through a few iterations and ideas to make it less goofy looking for the shot below... PhotoGrid_1586553117663~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Not easy getting these guys all by the dock at the bay. Applied a few more filters below, to really amp the vintage war museum painting/mural feel… 20200410_170920~2 by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr

The Sgt Stone legs definitely look better. I think one thing that ROC line got right was adding a baggy look to the pants. Plus, I also like that style of camo. I agree it may not be real-life military accurate, but I think that's why I like it so much. It's a unique color and pattern to G.I. Joe.
