Thanks so much for your thoughtful and detailed response.
I totally imagine Falcon as the kind of intellectual, idealistic SF operator, genuinely interested in other cultures, the kind of guy who might end up at odds with some of the more aggressive guys on the team (say if he were paired with a tough, experienced Sgt like maybe Beach Head). I could actually see a really good story involving that kind of conflict. I think there's something a little like this that happens in Generation Kill, although I forget the names of the characters involved. Tunnel Rat I've always seen as the highly motivated, slightly over achieving operators, aware of being one of the smaller guys on the team, with a whole lot to prove to others and himself. People talk about a "Napoleon complex" as if it is bad thing, but when I see a shorter statured EOD guy who carries a big ass pack, volunteers to take point, and often bring an M60 I see the kind of guy I'd want on my team. I'm looking forward to your individual writeups! I'd be be curious to know who would make your 14-26 list. |

Falcon with a beard??? That could be interesting.
Personally, I like Tunnel Rat and think that an EOD is essential to the team. However, his code name is dated (kind of like Dial-Tone) and really didn't fit his primary function of EOD. Most Vietnam "tunnel rats" were infantrymen or some combat engineers. But, I guess Tunnel Rat was Hasbro's way of introducing a new character and king of replacing an old character (Tripwire). This is fantastic, I love the way you are re-imagining this, and I love the discussion of backstories capturing the essence of a character while modernizing.
I do love the idea of Tunnel Rat as a combat engineer. I feel it fits him better than the traditional EOD/pure tunnel rat view. He always struck me as the guy who blew up explosives to clear them, rather than defuse them, or turning around claymores in a tunnel without disturbing the tripwire . I kind of like the idea of him being the short wiry guy with a Bangalore strapped to his back, and m60 or SAW in hand A combat engineer who doesn't mind tunnels fits with him nicely IMO. Also while tunnel clearing Vietnam style is not something soldiers face much today, we are seeing elaborate tunnel systems with drug lords, as well as urban operations being a potential rats nets full of concrete tunnels for sewer or electrical. As for falcon, I think keeping him clean shaven as the young idealistic version, but if you do a later generation team(like pretending the 88-90 joes like Ambush or Pathfinder were 20 years later) he would be great as the bearded senior guy who is world weary but still has that spark of making the world a better place. Super fun concept, I look forward to seeing more.

Your execution is brilliant as always, and i dig the concept. I think i'll borrow it. Different 13, though...

TIGER FORCE (Tiger 4 or T4):
Mentioned in a previous post here and in my other thread, I always wanted to get a photo of these four in a style retro to my T13, and based on their more classic BDUs. Shipwreck (Navy), Gung-Ho (Marines), Duke (Army), Spirit (Air Force) GiJoe_25th_85-00_Tiger4_2019-1005af by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr I hesitate to say that Shipwreck was a SEAL during this time period--maybe very close or very far away prior to this team's exploits. Duke serves as field commander (obviously), and Spirit is retconned as a renowned Pararescueman to cover that Military branch. In my series, there would full flasback episodes of this team's exploits, and would a fun crazy retro look and feel, drawing from the spirit of Hama's crazier fast paced adventures (yearbook 2's flavor and look would be awesome). At the same time, this flasback episodes/issue specifically around certain plot and character events of the present T13 (before or even after). The initial idea was to have Shipwreck in his classic togs, which spurred me to get that custom done a few weeks ago (late Sept 2019). However jlw515, made some nice comments about my DPP version, and that version blends in well with my 30th Duke, so I went with that for now. I imagine he would wear his classic suit except on special mission (or based on the artist/writer's preference for that issue/episode). To act as a visual concept study in my head, I played with differnt filters and effects. The one above was trying to play with old comic newsprint flavors. Below, I try to play with 70s/80s style magazine/catalog scan: GiJoe_25th_85-00_Tiger4_2019-1005ac by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Below tries to emulate more modern comic style: GiJoe_25th_85-00_Tiger4_2019-1005ad by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Test of B&W (for balance of shadows and blacks for equivalent penline definition): GiJoe_25th_85-00_Tiger4_2019-1005ae by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr And standard glamour photo shot: GiJoe_25th_85-00_Tiger4_2019-1005ab by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr Regarding the T13 and promised single photos and notes: The truth is I want to get some camo on these figures, but can't decide on the common pattern: tiger or digital. Tiger is done right can look amazing, but in my mind is a bit dated for my vision of this set--heck, keeping green vs tan is an ongoing debate in my mind. So I'd like to do digital, but still need to study the best process to get this done (hand or decal). Eventually, I will get to this (unless further distracted with other little/easier ideas/tasks across the HHFF spectrum...) |

The figures and the photography! I just wish that Hasbro would have put out figures that were this great, especially since they had the parts to do so after their amazing POC line of figures. Thanks again for sharing. As always, its been a pleasure seeing what you've come up with! -Todd Shakka85

Really love this, not sure how I missed it a while back.
A few random thoughts: Falcon looks very similar to the Sideshow extra Falcon head and I think it looks cool. Love the Duke, he really does have a Race Bannon feel, and as popular as it is, not a huge fan of that particular head. You made it look much much better. In my mind, and joe verse, Stalker is a Green Beret, not a ranger, he is a medic and linguist and his OG version had, well, a green beret. I see berets as "dress" or "office" head wear, so they could all be beret wearers but not have the berets on because they are headed to the field. Is Shipwreck a SEAL or not? Same with Topside. I think them being SEALs makes sense. Why else would a gunners mate or machinists mate be on a small elite team? Concur on the discussion of Dwayne Johnson being Gung Ho rather than RB. All in all, a great set up. Not sure that if you told me in advance the plans, I would have been sold, but seeing it, it is awesome. |

Let me know if you are able to use the app, and I'll explain the filter and toggle settings I used for the newsprint effect... Quote:

All in all, a great set up. Not sure that if you told me in advance the plans, I would have been sold, but seeing it, it is awesome. Falcon head: if I didn't mention it before, the headband look is something I envisioned and sketched back in the early 90s, and was shocked and elated when I saw that exclusive Sideshow head (as well as the headband Duke head when it came out). The sketches I did were only headshots of various T13 guys in black and white, like what Marvel Comics had in the upper left corner back in the 80s. I wanted a skullcap head before I realized that that was Tunnel Rat's look. That then got me wanting Falcon in the group, but his mugshot looked just like Flint's. Since Falcon was Green Beret, which back then I associated with Southeast Asia ops and Vietnam War, and then Platoon, the bandana image stuck--almost exactly per the Sideshow Exclusive. Berets: Visually, berets look great in cartoons and comics, and in ceremonial togs in real life. But I just cringe everytime I see it in live movies and television (Expendables, Hawk in ROC, recently on Black Lighting). So I try to steer away from them, especially for the field operators. Staker=Green Beret? Never thought about until you brought it up, and I like it a whole lot. It makes more sense in retrospect, and allows him to keep his vintage beret color while being accurate (in real Joe canon). I still want guys from both camps, and making Falcon fresh from Ranger Training actual fits better in my mind (maybe Falcon giving an new interesting connection between him and Beachhead). Since Stalker was on previous teams with Duke, SS and Scarlett in my T13 universe, I always looked at him not as a Ranger, but as a special ops guy, selected early from 75th Reg--but I think I may change it up. The idea of trying to tap into the different backgrounds (Ranger, Special Forces, Marines, SEALs) is really more of a figure filecard thing for me (I treat T13 as toyline and story development), but would lend itself to the main story by allowing the different perspectives in handling situations due to different backgrounds and training. But really, once you're on this team, you're beyond those branches and identifications. Shipwreck=SEAL? Yeah later and by the time he's on the current day T13. But back in T4, what I want in his personality and style seems very opposed to what we would realistically expect from a SEAL, and that's the struggle I've had. It makes sense for the Navy guy in Joe to be a SEAL, and it makes sense for Shipwreck to by the Joe Navy guy, but the Shipwreck we grew up with is no SEAL. Does that make sense? Anyway, thanks for the thoughts, we got me thinking more (which helps to generate more figures and pics)! |
