SWAGGER! Yup! The pictures definitely have that slow-motion walk scene feel to them!

IV) RAWHIDES
GiJoe_T13-03set4_2018-1027ac by J Perez, on Flickr To round out this newly formed unit, these young recruits were brought onto to the first team to balance out the seasoned experience of the rest with fresh blood and expanded unique talents. Specially scouted then recruited by Flint and Lady Jaye, these operators are eager but raw, and will need to special operations training on the go—but they’ve got the natural skills, and some operators to show them the way. GiJoe_T13-03set4_2018-1027bb by J Perez, on Flickr Behind the Scenes: The previous lore of Tunnel Rat and Falcon lend them to being new recruits--leading to the idea of this particular subgroup. And while divvying up the rest of the team into other subgroups, I made the decision to de-age Roadblock a bit and set him up as the third new Rawhide in this new Joe world. The Renegades cartoon played a large part in me greenlighting this change, as I like the pairing of Tunnel Rat and Roadblock visually and interactively. Plus, when I think of classic Roadblock and Tunnel Rat, they don’t seem to fit the classic special operator mold (green beret, ranger, navy seal, etc). Therefore, making them special recruits new to this type of team felt right in that respect. When I get to Roadblock’s profile, I’ll explain a little more on what may be another one of those controversial changes post-Hama comic writers make which pisses off long-time Joe fans (like myself—believe me I know). So feel free to comment now, and later I will be able to assure you that this can work (hopefully)… GiJoe_T13-03set4_2018-1027ad by J Perez, on Flickr GiJoe_T13-03set4_2018-1027bc by J Perez, on Flickr Check back in December for more individual figure pictures and character breakdowns. Question and comments are always appreciated, and will help to drive future content. Thanks to all! |

How in the world did you get the figures to hold that pose long enough to take a picture?!
Can't wait to see more pics. I love that Tunnel Rat head sculpt. Once again, I like the back story of these guys being young recruits - we are on the same page once again. In my mind (Joeverse), the original Joe Team is kind of like Stryker's special team in the Wolverine origin movie (but not the sadistic side of Stryker's motivation), in that Gen. Colton wants some young recruits who are a little easier to motivate for a particular agenda (if Colton in fact has a particular agenda - hmmmm?). Can't wait to see more. Jason |

This is the best customs set I have seen in awhile! I commented earlier on these but as you highlight each group this is keeps getting better. I have several projects on my table that I have not been motivated to finish, you sir have provided me that motivation. Bravo, sir!!

In my last post, I kinda wrote myself into putting these guys into some kinda in your face action pose opposite the slow-mo saunter of the vets--but I didn't have a clue on how I was going to pull it off. After a few days of thinking and tinkering, it came together pretty nicely. And they can hold the pose all day long (thank you science and engineering!). I should have taken another pic from the side showing the setup, but had to take the setup down when the idea for the second pic came to mind. Quote:

But as you allude to in your Joeverse, it's always fun to hint and tease to the true motivations and agenda (or reaction agenda) of those in command--classic Joe and military fiction. My summary blurb was originally going to include a bit not too different to your Colton line, but seemed a bit to sinister sounding and got scrapped. Thanks again for your comments Jason! Quote:

As for your works in progress: How about a tease of what's to come? That might help things really get going. The tease/preview in my first post is what really pushed me with this set. |

I have to echo GAAWAY's point -- this project, along with your Cobra project -- has been an inspiration! Your Cobra project in particular motivated me to get off my duff and finally finish fixing the flaws in my various troops, which have long rankled me and my perfectionist tendencies. Stole a few ideas too!

So much to digest here. I really like these. Aesthetically, perhaps a little more black overall than I'd go for, and between their hats and their black. Gung Ho and Stalker look kind of similar.
I'm glad Tunnel Rat made the cut - he's my favorite Joe, hands down. I've also wondered about reimagining Falcon - as a interpreter and medic in the Green Beret "hearts and minds" tradition I actually think of him going with the embedded special forces look with a full beard, but this is great too - kind of strange that of all G.I.Joe Outback was the only character with a headband for his main look. I think Your Falcon and Stalker are the only two here who aren't obviously recognizable. Not sure if that's a pro or a con. I like how Scarlet pairs so well with SE now. Beachhead - yikes, that bayonet! |

Beachhead - yikes, that bayonet! I hear you on all the black. That was all influenced by first by college ideas/wants then the ROC movie designs. For the last 3 years or so, I put this set on the back burner and got into refining my O13 joe sets and classic 82-86 Cobras. Coming back to this set was a little offsetting with its lack of vibrant colors, and all the black does not photograph easily. Regarding Stalker and Gung-Ho's hats, I only recently noticed the close similarity myself. I've been playing with some alternate heads for Stalker (I love my current head sculpt and love Stalker, but am not 100% sold with this head sculpt as Stalker). Ideally I'd like a hat more similar to Lady Jaye's. Also, I don't have a character with a boonie hat--but don't know if that will sell as Stalker either. To be continued... I'm glad you're glad about Tunnel Rat. It feels like he needs the most defending for inclusion in the set, along with Falcon. Admittedly they are not my top top favorites, but I really love having them in this set. I'm also glad my Falcon take works for you. Ideally, I wanted all to be relatively familiar, and pass the Rick Test. The Rick Test is showing these to an old friend of mine--who was fairly familiar with G.I. Joe way back in the day but hasn't kept up since those mid-eighties--and having him be able to identify the character. My Falcon (and Stalker) probably fail that Rick Test, but an older custom Falcon--complete with beret and backpack--actually did fail anyway, so WTF... You mention the embedded special forces look with full beard, and now I'm really interested in that idea--I think that is the current image that comes to mind these days for special forces, much like the vintage Falcon was the special forces image back in its time. For now, I stick to the clean cut look of Falcon to emphasize his youth. But the idea for him in my Joeverse is down the road, he becomes a legendary like soldier and leader of this G.I.Joe--almost like how Joe Colton works in Hasbro lore but in reverse (future instead of past). I'd like to make a custom of that future version, so the bearded idea helps feed that. Agreed that Falcon and Stalker are pretty divergent from established looks. I still want to find subtle clever ways to get more nods the the classic look but it gets harder with time as I get so used to these customs as they are. We'll see what happens in the next few months... |
