Cobra Officer
Enemy Officer (Prototype Version) In a 1982 GI Joe toy catalogue, we get a look at the original lineup of Joes, more or less in their final forms, with a couple of Cobras in the background who were not. Hasbro designers originally mocked up the ARAH Joes using Mego CHiPs action figures, and it's clear from the pictures that these Cobras were still the mock-ups. Their final versions had presumably not been completely tooled yet when the catalogue was shot. I have a small collection of Mego 3-3/4” figures, including a few doubles, so I decided to make some customs based on these prototype figures. I did not try to recreate them exactly, which would probably be impossible anyway due to lack of complete reference material, but I only used Mego parts and used elements of both the prototypes and the final figures in designing them. So I found some parts that worked together, added some details with expoxy putty as Hasbro surely did back in the day, and then painted them up. One wrinkle in the painting was that the Mego method of doing eyes was to make a depression for the iris, which was presumably an attempt to give the eye some definition without having to use a paint app. So that makes painting the eyes a bit tricky, as they were never intended to be painted. But I think I did alright there. Nicely done! And thanks for adding the picture of the prototype from the catalogue; I hadn't seen these before, and was not aware of Hasbro using the Mego figures... I didn't realize the Megos came out before Joe!

Yes, and they're why Joes had the articulation that they did. The original run of Joes used almost exactly the same mechanical design as the Mego figures. Which they probably based on the Micronauts figures they produced (which came from Japan), which in turn were ultimately based on the articulation of the 12" GI Joe if you go back far enough through a series of toy lines.
Which would mean that 3-3/4" Joes were based on 12" Joes, but only after taking a very long detour through Japan and a number of toy companies. |

As a kid the prototype Cobra soldier always looked to me like the pistol in the web gear was removable. However, as an adult, I don't see it as much. Strange how your perception was as a child. Kind of like, as a kid I could have sworn that in the Sear's catalog it was Flint with a red beret sitting in the Bridge Layer. Jason |

I haven't posted here in a long time.
Getting a bit bored with modern customs. But these are special. Great concept carried out expertly. Can't believe you even used vintage mego parts. To me this is what customising is all about. BRAVO!!!! |
