My generous friends here at the Tank have enabled my foolishness for years by heaping hyperbolic praise on any half-assed head swap I produce, but occasionally I'm all, "Sorry, boys, even a head-swap is too much work for this small town white boy today." Yes, this is another of my semi-regular "found art" customs, which is to say it isn't a custom at all; sometimes I just grab a Lion-O toy and say, "Screw you all, this is Skeletor!" and the long-suffering mods mutter to one another about medication and avoiding eye contact. In today's example of non-creativity, I used a small portion of our tax refund to purchase a ThreeA action figure called (*deep breath*) World War Robot Night Fixer Jenkins Rothchild Field Mechanic. (Seriously, that's the toy's name. It's a bit much.) But I like to streamline things, so I call him something much shorter, simpler, and more rousing: Tunnel Rat! As soon as I saw those streaks on his face and arms, which I suspect are actually meant to evoke grease, since he's a mechanic (as in greasemonkey), I knew I had to have this toy, and I had to utilize him as Tunnel Rat. Consider: All he needs is a beanie; I'm thinking of cutting the thumb tip off a mitten, but I'll probably never get around to it. Is it just me? Admittedly, he also looks like DJ Conner, from Roseanne. Whatever the case, it's a kickass toy. Check out these boots! They put Hot Toys boots to shame! Alert viewers may have noticed the unlikely addition on Tunnel Rat's person of miniature Tunnel Rats. I bought some Kreon mini-figures to use as T-Rat's wee robot pals. Or maybe they're wee bombs, 'cause like I wrote on Facebook, I love the image of Tunnel Rat hooting his derision as he tosses 'sploding Mini-Me Tunnel Rat grenades at unsuspecting Cobra Troopers. This notion of collecting mini-robots of oneself is a weird fixation of mine dating back to Pakistan in 2011: Here are a few more shots of "Tunnel Rat": The bug in that last shot is real; he happened by while I was posing Tunnel Rat, so I made him famous... by whatever metric deems "seen by a couple hundred fellow weirdos on a G.I. Joe forum" as famous. I have a few more shots I'll share soon, and ideas for even more portraits, and also lots of ideas for considerably weirder takes on the 3A-figures-as-Joes notion. I also hope to procure a Mole Pod or three to use as mini drill drone thingies: In the meantime, thanks for checking out another of my goofy, self-indulgent threads! Forgot to mention: I'll probably try photographing Tunnel Rat on Joe Colton's vintage WWII Harley:

Outstanding figure, really does look the part too, just get him a beanie and doo rag and maybe a couple of weapons to go into the tunnel with, never know what you may find in one of those!

Thanks, Skull! There's another 3A figure who has a gun accessory that's probably fifteen or twenty inches long. I thought it'd be funny to give that one to Tunnel Rat as commentary on the ginormous gun Hasbro included with the vintage Tunnel Rat figure.

Very cool! That name is ridiculously long, I agree Tunnel Rat is better.

Thanks, kuh_rupht!
I captured several new shots of "Tunnel Rat" today. I've wanted to capture a photo of a Tunnel Rat toy (any Tunnel Rat toy) in that spot for months, ever since I photographed Hot Toys Joe Colton there. Indeed, the title of that Colton portrait left no doubt: Speaking of Joe Colton, he loaned his Harley to Tunnel Rat: The title of that last portrait is the slogan of tunnel rats. It translates as "Not Worth a Rat's Ass". Meanwhile, I probably won't buy any other sixth-scale vehicles (they tend to be pricey, and they take up a lot of space), but it has occurred to me that it might be fun to take a wooden box and weather its interior and fill it with props and a chair and pretend it's the cockpit of something like an Acid Rain Stronghold. In the meantime, the hole in this pipe looked to me like a porthole, so I pretended Tunnel Rat was indeed inside a tank or Stronghold, looking longingly at the foliage outdoors. More soon! |

This downed tree with its embedded soil and protruding roots is quickly becoming my favorite photo setting.
