This is the state of my Cobra Shelf, as of Feb 2, 2018. When I took this photo, I really considered as the "final" version. But...
gCobra_25th_MainDisplay_2018-0128c by HissHissFangFang, on Flickr I took this after finishing up the Dreadnok photos, and putting everyone back on the shelf. The bottom/4th shelf expanded since I started posting here at Hisstank--from a 1982-1983 group to include reimagined troop builder variants for 1983 to 1986. The additions to the lower shelf from previous arrangements changed the feel of the display shelf as whole. Whereas before, there where 7 real distinct groupings, now it is more reading as one complete collection, as Cobras from years 1982 to 1986, with a portion of 1987, and sprinkles of 88 and 89 that blend in well. That period reflects my own time of original collecting as a kid. My OCD liked this idea, but is now bothered by the inclusion of the more modern Dreadnok characters (Burnout, Zanya, Storm Rider). So now, I'm looking for suitable alternative replacements for those figures. I'm working on some figures now, which hopefully will pan out. Also, this display room gets much better photo daylighting in spring or summer, so the final photo won't be until then. That, my friend, is one incredible display of Cobras! Not too large of a group, but not too small either... Nice job on the custom ones!

Replacements figures for some Dreadnoks still waiting for some final approvals in my brain before posting...
For now, just prove I'm not all just about Cobra: my main G.I. Joe shelf, above the Cobra shelf, taken a few years ago, but basically unchanged to this day: The O13 are usually in separate grouping to the left, with a N13 (!) grouping on the right. Most are stock releases, with a few kitbashes and repaints mixed in to complete some groups by year. A few of the Club membership incentive figures, but none of the FSS or convention figs. A LOT could easily use upgrades based on the customs found on this site. But as a large group like this, they pass the squint eye test, so I've been happy as shown. If I ever start breaking this guys out for closer group shots, though, I'd likely start tearing these guys apart... |

Some update on the Dreadnok front:
Zanya, Storm Rider, and Burnout get bumped for a 50th style Zartan, Crusher, and Demolisher. Zartan (50th Anniverary Style): gCobra_25th_89Dreadnoks-1Zartan_2018-0210b by J Perez, on Flickr Though it might not be apparent, this is a rebuilt 50th Zartan, for display with the Dreadnok set. I generally liked Hasbro's 50th Zartan, (skin tone, armour color, covered belly) but had some issues with it that I tried to fix. First and foremost, I did not like the height of the figure, as it stood too short next to many of the Dreadnok set. Second, I did not like the how the hood sat on his shoulders--part of that had to do with the collar of the Renegades Duke figure they used. The upper torso of a 50th Shipwreck was used, which fixed the collar issue, had a matching neck color, increased the height of the figure, and as a bonus, narrowed the shoulders and brings the shoulder armour closer to the chest armour. The hood is from the second 25th Zartan, as are the legs. These legs were used with 25th Gungho feet to further increase the figure's height. Finally, the hood length in the back was increased with Aves sculpting, to block out daylighting from the back. Pic with my tweaked 25th Zartan: gCobra_25th_89Dreadnoks-1Zartan_2018-0212a by J Perez, on Flickr My 25th Zartan also got a recent update, which again is not readily apparent. I finally got around to replacing the Gungho torso, using a Ripper torso shaved down. Also carved out around the hip sockets to get rid of the diaper crotch look. The update torso is a bit narrower than previous, slightly reducing the gap between shoulder armour and chest armour. The maroon areas then had to be repainted. I used Citadel base Screamer Pink--which seems to work well, despite not really being a real close color match to the original figure. The figure ends up shorter than before, but can still stand with the original 3 noks, as well as the other 1984 figures without being too short. Plus, no flesh repaint required. Finally, for both Zartans' chest armour, the side connector pegs were trimmed and glued down for a more streamlined look. gCobra_25th_85-4p1_2018-0217b by J Perez, on Flickr gCobra_25th_84-00_2018-0227c by J Perez, on Flickr Crusher and Demolisher: gCobra_25th_89Dreadnoks-4p3_2018-0204d by J Perez, on Flickr This was taken a month ago. Was hoping to get a few more greeblies and tattoos on them for an updated pic, but I'm dragging my feet on that. Although Crusher and Demolisher were released in 2004 (much later than the rest of my Dreadnok set), they felt more in the spirit of the the 80s figures of the Cobra Shelf as a whole. I've seen better versions of these guys here and at JoeCustoms.com, but I wanted to only use my on-hand fodder. Demolisher: Jurassic Park figure, shaved head, vest from 50th Gungho, grenades from first Retaliation Cobra Trooper Crusher: Head from Star Wars Comic Pack fig, torso and vest from 25th Torch (sculpted thicker neck), arms from FSS Pathfinder, Legs from 25th Firefly (which later were switched with my Gnaw's legs). Flesh repainted with some tan-flesh mix (that I'll likely not be able to recreate) Updated Dreadnok shelf set pic: gCobra_25th_89-85_Dreadnoks_2018-0218d by J Perez, on Flickr

Crusher and Demolisher are both fantastic looking new Dreadnoks! They definitely appear the part as members of the 'Noks, and they look good in the group shot. Great work on all!

Latest update on the Cobra Shelf. Daylight in this room won't get any better:

All the response really pushed this figure collection to another level in terms of the figures themselves and photo archiving. It has been a wonderful experience! http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...sfangfang.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...sfangfang.html http://www.hisstank.com/forum/g-i-jo...sfangfang.html |

You have a great eye for displaying the figures in appealing ways, and the photos are helpful for me as I figure out how to display my own figures.
I'm curious about a couple of the figures, which might be customs, as I don't recognize them or see them in the YoJoe archive and I don't see them called out in this thread. One is the Scarface Courier character and the other is the doctor Venom character. I don't believe you elaborated on their builds in the other threads, so was wondering if you could give us some insight into their builds. Thanks! edit: Found the good doctor's build info here: http://www.hisstank.com/forum/5061629-post50.html Last edited by edgecrusher; 08-10-2018 at 06:36 PM.. |
