The diorama is 5 meters wide, between 75cm and 85 cm deep and 70 cm high. It shows an attack on a stronghold of a gang of East Asian pirates and smugglers. It includes a total of 81 figures, 43 of them soldiers and 38 bad guys and girls. The boats are (from left to right): two yellow inflatables from Chap Mei, customized Playmobil boat, Hydro Foil from Hasbro, a small boat with turbine from the Chap Mei series Bad Guyz, a Playmobil yacht, a customized boat from the Chap mei series Jungle Adventure and a green recon boat from the GI Joe vehicle Havoc. The amphibious vehicle is a Lanard model. The canon inside the bunker is a Chap Mei toy.

In fact it is a lot of fun and it is great against stress. Unfortunately Hasbro has stopped selling GI Joe figures in Brasil about five years ago. This year Hasbro also stopped selling Star Wars figures at the scale and is trying to sell these sad 15cm figures without a lot of success to say the least. Lanard figures are also being sold very rarely. Therefore it has become difficult to get figures at scale 1:18. That is the reason why I mixed Japanese and Chinese characters: I do not have enough figures to restrict the diorama to one of the two cultures. Fortunately I have the necessary space available at home and an overall collection of more than 4,000 figures (not only GI Joe but everything that fits into scale 1:18). A lot more dioramas you can find on my blog dioramas118.blogspot.com.br

Great dio! Sorry to hear the plight of the 1/18th scale figures. It may happen here pretty soon, too.

It seems that Hasbro did not learn from past errors. Years ago Hasbro tried to replace the traditional GI Joe lines with the Sigma line that had a very different scale. Customers did not buy because most had already invested considerable amounts in the 1:18 scale lines. The same happens in Brazil with the Star Wars figures now. The 15cm figures are not being bought because collectors are not willing to start all over again with a different size of figures. Unfortunately the Brazilian toy trading companies are protected from imports by so-called non-tarif rules. That means that in theory everyone could import but in case of toys the authorities demand an expensive safety certification and do not recognize certificates from uproad. Furthermore, each toy company only gets permission for importation of certain contingents (volumes) of toys. On the other hand there exists e.g. a Brazilian toy manufacturer in the countryside of the state of São Paulo which pirates Bruder toys in cheap PVC and nobody does anything about it. Some years ago I was in contact with Bruder Germany and assisted with an estimate of importation cost (I am a tax consultant and auditor) but in the end Bruder did not export to Brazil because of the market conditions here. It is tough to have model building as hobby if you live in Brazil!
