I use to think you guys did great jobs on your customs. Yesterday I tried my first "figure" custom and man, I have soooo much more respect for you guys now. I thought it was going to be really easy but it's a huge pain in the a$$. The whole time I was doing it I kept saying, “well this is the first and last custom I ever do”.
I have a question, how do you get the paint on the hinges to stay on? Mine came off right away. I washed my figure first with warm soup & water, painted it with Tamiya Color Acrylic paint, then let sit for 24 hrs. As soon as I moved the arms the paint peeled off of the hinges. Also where the chest sometimes touches the upper torso, it chipped there too. How do you get it so the paint doesn't come off? Also, are customs only for looking at up on a shelf or can you actually play with them? (My son and I play GI Joe all the time so would like to know). Thanks for the help guys. |

Well there's your problem! Soup doesn't even come close! I wash my figs with clam chowder.

Well, serious answer to your question, some of us sand down the joint so that it's looser so after the paint, then it's not rubbing. I avoid painting joints as much as possible. Heck, I avoid painting as much as possible!

the only thing i can say about painting, is take your time, becareful, have pride in every stroke, have a conscience, be a perfectionist, steady hand, cosentration an keep practicing.
to some they are naturals, others have to try, an then theirs the ones that just cant do it, cus they lack everything i just said. an never wash your stuff in soup an water man. that's prob your prob lol. the hinges you have to trim down using a dremel. |

I was trying to get the oil from my hands off the plastic and heard soap and water was good. I thought about paint thinner but I figured that wouldn't be good on the soft plastic. Maybe alcohol would work better.
A lot of people seem to talk about using a dremel. Are they talking about a fixed dremel or something they attach to a drill or what? Thanks for all your responses. The clam chowder idea was the most helpful. |

Along with what everyone else said, Practice, Practice, Practice! It takes time to get good, I've been told my paint is great at times and I'll see all the imperfections so I strive to do better with each one. I also try to find parts where I either don't have to paint, or I only have to use a little paint.
It makes part selection harder, but the rest of the custom winds up a little easier after that |
