Some group shots and additional art courtesy of Sam.
Thanks to all for looking ***EDIT*** Sam (our resident packaging expert extraordinaire) surprised us and sent along an added bonus. Aside from his stellar work on all the packaging mock-ups and artwork for Night Force Week, he created custom sticker sheets to go with each vehicle! Enjoy!

Day 7: Mystics and Terror
Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-ups by Sam Airborne by Oreobuilder Airborne was one of my first Joes and has remained a favorite of mine over the years. The Night Tomahawk was the first thing I wanted to do for this project (I had more than enough spares since the TRU clearance sale), so making a Night Force Airborne seemed like a natural fit. It was a good opportunity to update the recipe a bit with some modern parts and give the chopper a crew. Spirit by Bucky I like Spirit. I'm not a die hard Spirit fan by any means, but he's probably in my top ten. I hadn't realized it, but upon looking, I've done a Spirit custom every year since 2012. (Regular, air commando, and now Night Force). I tried to go with a look that is easily copied, doing absolutely no modifications on the figure. It's just parts swapping and paint. I struggled with the webgear for a bit, until deciding on the Outback vest, giving him a unique look that isn't usually associated with Spirit. Getting the skin tones to match and keep the figure fully poseable wasn't going to be an option, so I went with the painted face route, which has been seen a couple times on some great customs. I'm very happy with how he turned out. Night Terror w. Hot-Seat by Dusty79 This started out as just an idea to add some other Night Force vehicle to the lineup and I was all for it, but in a project like this, that turned out to be tougher than it sounds. We didn't want to simply do a remake of a Night Force vehicle done by Hasbro and we wanted it to be something unique that Hasbro has not reissued multiple times. Then you have to think about is the vehicle compatible with modern Joes and by the time you sort all that out it makes it pretty tough to find a vehicle that fits and I hit a few dead ends. After combing through yojoe.com and much thought, Bucky and I decided on the Raider. It is a vehicle that has plenty of space in the cockpit for modern figures, it has not been reissued, and it was never a Night Force vehicle. The fact that it had a driver that had not been updated was a bonus.

Day 6: Ex-Cobra Agents
TEAM EX 2-Pack Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-ups by Sam Mercer by Bucky I have bought many of the BBTS 7 packs in the last couple years, as the price for them is pretty fair and the parts always come in handy. As a result of that, I have numerous Mercer pieces laying around. I thought he would be a fun addition to Night Force, and went with a slightly different route with the lower legs, using BAT. Ones, in a slight nod to the vipers that came out around 2001-2002. After he was finished and painted up, he ends up being my favorite one I did for the project. He just flows very smoothly. Storm Shadow by Bucky I'm not a big ninja lover, so I usually buy them for parts and pieces. With that, I had pieces from the dark ninja from retaliation, and the dollar general storm shadow. Once I popped that blue head on the dark body, the rest fell into place, creating a unique look for Storm Shadow.

Day 5: Air Operations
Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-ups by Sam Night Tomahawk w. Lift –Ticket by Oreobuilder In my Joe-verse, Night Force is not a standing unit. I imagine, every Joe has his ‘’standard’’ uniform as well as a Night Force uniform for night operations. In the same vein, vehicles get special mission-specific paint jobs as needed. When the Tomahawk was released, I knew I wanted a black one in my collection, although I am not the only person to make one (I'm, at best, the 43rd person to do so lol). I was fortunate to find a couple on clearance at Toys R Us, so I picked them up and set about painting it. For Lift-Ticket, I used a PoC LT as a base. This allowed me to make him using very little paint. Night Star w. Blast Off by Oreobuilder Another relic from ‘’Project 96’’, the Stellar Stiletto was a good candidate for a repaint in my opinion. Since I did not have the original missiles, I had to use some from the old vehicle weapons pack. Luckily, the Triple-T missiles fit perfectly. When we were brainstorming potential members for the Night Force team, I used Bellomo’s guide as inspiration. Looking at the Mega Marines, I realized that, with a few tweaks, Blast Off’s colors worked well for Night Force. Also, (going by his name and not his ARAH specialties) he was also a pretty logical pilot for the Stiletto.

Day 4: Heavy Weapons
TEAM Heavy 2-Pack Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-ups by Sam Short Fuse by Dusty79 OB and Bucky wanted to expand the Night Force project and they hit me up to do a couple of figures to contribute to the 2-packs. Bucky suggested Short-Fuze and with some bouncing ideas back and forth between us, this figure became a combination of pieces of various versions of the character from the past. The emphasis here was to give a modern update as well as make him Night Force. I tried to keep certain cues from the character, such as the blond hair, the glasses, and a webgear that resembled his previous Night Force version. Then it was just a matter of arming him with some fitting artillery equipment. Barricade by Oreobuilder Barricade is a ‘’relic’’ of Project 96, what eventually became GI Joe: Resurgence. When Bucky and I started on that project, we looked at which Battle Corps figures would have possibly gotten repaints. Barricade was one of my favorites from Battle Corps Month, so he went to the top of my list.

Day 3: SEAL Operations
Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-ups by Sam Night Raft w. Tracker by Bucky As the idea behind a Night Force reveal being separate from Resurgence developed, I was stuck on characters to include. There are a lot of joes out there, but finding ones that can be made through modern era tooling and still look decent can be a tricky challenge. The idea to do tracker came about with finding the raft last fall at dollar general during a sale, for $2.50. I thought that'd be great to do an updated Tracker. As time went on, the idea behind the figure sat around as I worked on new sculpt, and then Resurgence. Every time I went back to start him, I wasn't happy with the colors to bring him into the modern era. That problem was solved by adding him to Night Force, allowing me to tackle the figure and not worry about how to get past the originals colors. The glasses were a decent substitute for the originals visor, which is huge on the modern era heads. Night Devil w. Shipwreck by Oreobuilder When Bucky and I started this project, we were looking for some vehicles to repaint that were not the most common. We wanted them to be a bit different than the ones we see most often, so we went into the vehicle archives and picked some out that had not seen many or recent releases. I had a spare Devilfish in my fodder box and it seemed to fit the bill. When it came to the driver, Shipwreck was not the first character that came to mind. I looked at Torpedo, Wetsuit and Beachhead, but all of these were not ideal for various reasons. Shipwreck made sense and was possible to make in an LBC-ish manner.

Day 2: Emergency Response
TEAM EMS 2-Pack: Filecards by GITrekker Packaging mock-up by Sam Barbecue by Oreobuilder: Although I could not find a good reason for Barbecue to be in Night Force, he was one of my favorite figures when I was a kid and was one of the first characters I wanted to add to the team. GITrekker’s excellent filecard actually found a pretty good justification for his inclusion. I picked up a few BBTS Marauders 7-Packs for fodder, so I have a bunch of Spare Barbecues. He will probably show up in some other sub-teams very soon. Bullhorn by Oreobuilder: Bullhorn was one of my favorite customs from last year. When this project came along, it was a good opportunity to look at a fresh color scheme for Bullhorn. I changed out a couple of parts to keep him modern.

Day 1: Team OG13 and the Night Shift Cycle w. Smokescreen
All filecards by GITrekker All packaging mock-ups by Sam Panico TEAM OG13 2-Pack Stalker by Bucky Stalker was a character I had pieced together for some time, but not quite in these colors. I had no intention of making him Night Force originally. He sat on a wip shelf as I worked on other figures. After going over figures that had never been in Night Force, I decided to go that route. I took a bit of a gamble using the Wayans head, but I think it worked out ok with the facial hair added. That particular head sculpt is very well done, regardless of the hate for the character. Breaker by Dusty79 Breaker was a character I had always wanted to do a modern update on, but had never gotten past the brainstorming stage. When thinking about a character to do for a Night Force 2-pack, he came to mind only after considering a few other characters and moving on. Once I decided to go with Breaker, I took the ideas I had previously jotted down and started fleshing him out. I thought he needed the headgear so I used the 25th version and modified it making it look more modern and making it wireless. His electronics are housed in a small backpack fitted with satellite receiver and he was given a small aerial drone to use to transmit signals over geologic obstacles in the event the satellite link fails. I also thought it was important that he be protected by body armor as his role is an important one and he is frequently in the danger zone. Night Shift Cycle by Oreobuilder This was the very last item we added to our line-up. When we were putting together our order of battle, we felt that we needed an add-on to our OG13 day. Looking at the possibilities, the RAM stood out because it had not been done in these colors before (The VAMP and MoBAT have received the black color scheme treatment before). Smokescreen by Bucky For Smokescreen, I wanted to use a base body that would not require much paint in order to have him posed on the motorcycle without any chipping, and the new viper body was a great color. Not alot on this figure, I did include the motorcycle helmet from the comic packs, that fits rather snug on the Low Light head. I added some face paint to help distinguish the head a bit. Bucky, Dusty79, Sam, GITrekker and I have been working on a few things things lately. First off, a brief announcement. After that, we'll get to the good stuff :-) Phoenix Customs Phoenix Customs? What is that? Quick answer, it is our small group of customizers started by Bucky, Dusty79 and Oreobuilder. The three of us have started working on so many common projects that we decided we needed a name for our little gang. Also, aside from GITrekker and Sam Panico that have been contributing regularly to our projects, we will also be adding new members to our team shortly. We have enlisted some help from two others very recently for a large project next summer. Given all of this, we figured it would be simpler to have one name to round up everyone. It’s easier and it makes custom thread titles much shorter! Each one of us will continue posting our own customs separately on occasion, but for our large projects, expect to see Phoenix Customs. We’ll be kicking this off with a brand new project starting tomorrow and lasting a whole week. Night Force Week by Phoenix Customs Mission: ‘’When the sun goes down, the GI JOE NIGHT FORCE squad is ready for action! NIGHT FORCE is a covert team specializing in nighttime surveillance, reconnaissance and defensive operations. Missions conducted in the darkness have special problems, which the NIGHT FORCE squad has overcome with enhanced skills, sophisticated hardware and advanced technology. They use the element of surprise to vanquish Cobra, striking under cover of darkness and disappearing into the night, mission accomplished!’’ – Text adapted from original Night Force mission statement Why Night Force? Remember Project 96? It was the original name for what morphed into GI Joe Resurgence. We won’t bore you guys with the details again (you can read about it here if you like: Oreobuilder's Blog: GI Joe: Resurgence Starts July 1st), but this sub-line was meant to be a part of the larger project. We picked Night Force because, in 1996, it would have made sense, from Hasbro’s perspective, to bring this theme back to support a more ‘’back-to-basics’’ approach. So, we set out to pick characters that could have been repainted at the time. In our planning, we mapped out a main line, mail away products and a retailer exclusive line. When we put together the Resurgence order of battle, we quickly realized that we could not fit Night Force within our 31-day time frame and that the theme and characters no longer fit our overall objective of a ‘’soft reboot’’ of the line. However, we had all these customs already made. Therefore, we decided to split it off. Our approach was simple. These figures are meant to be repaints and kitbashes from existing figures and vehicles. Contrary to Resurgence, which would have had a lot of hypothetical new tooling, Night Force would have been assembled from existing parts and represent existing characters. Like the originals, we planned them out to be a series of thematic 2-pack and vehicles. Once again, GITrekker lent us his services to flesh out these characters and Sam is back with some awesome brand new packaging. We’ll be rolling out our complete line-up all next week starting on Monday the 27th. Sit back, enjoy and comments are always welcome! Bucky, Dusty79, Sam, GITrekker and Oreobuilder
