Noticed a lot of new guys on here who are doing great coming with some awesome custom ideas. But could probably use a little help wit htheir painting skills. Now please, please no one get offended. I am new to customizing Joes myself and am having pretty good success so far so i am NOT criticizing anyone.
I though a thread with some links to painting tips, or even some tips from some of our pro customizers would be cool. There are some customizing gods on here who have valuable experience i hope they will share. One place I found extremely helpful is the gamesworkshop website, home of Warhammer. I started Warhammer about ten years ago and recently got rid of all my minis but learned alot about painting. The magazine they put out--White Dwarf is great, each issue is full of painting tips. I have a stack of them still. If anyone wants a few to get ideas/tips I will glad send them to you for the price of postage. PM me. Anyone else with great ideas out there? |

For those of you who have trouble painting eyes ...
Go to a Michaels or Hobby Lobby and pick up a .005 Pigma Micron pen. Draw the eyes right on! I've yet to have a failur, but because of the wet paint, it sometimes takes some draw, paint, draw, paint, draw, paint... but the results work nicely. Tom |

I'm a decent painter from learning with some DragonLance miniatures some 15 years or more ago, and some Star Wars models. Those are some tiny eyebrows on those things! I was so proud of myself for giving a girl freckles and learning drybrushing and washes. I used hobby craft paint, which is typically used for wood projects and stuff. Its cheap, but I don't recommend it, but a nice way to learn and may be cheaper than hobby paints if you find a perfect color for a detail you don't want to waste expensive paints mixing.
Anyway, I just wanted to say that is quite a friendly and generous offer, and I salute you for it. I hope you get some takers, too. I'd love to see some even greater stuff on here, and trial and error can get pretty expensive! |

Tom I use a tiny .005 Micron, and Quick Kick looks great withot the pin eyes. Turned Zartan V1 from a figure I loathed into I Like a lot. Speaking of Gundam markers, the thin style do come in a variety of colors, the grey one I got has been useful for shading recessed lines of projects when I wanted to go more subtle than black. Cant recommend their larger paint markers, mine seemed to flake easily. |

I have been toying with the idea of making a custom for some time now. Years ago I tried to make an Indy figure using Star Wars POTF2 figs and Testors paint but didnt like the results. I guess what I'm wondering is, what brand of paints work the best? I have a Michael's nearby, but I can't find anything other than Testors enamels or fabric paints. Also, which sculpting material would you guys rate the best?

Toothpicks work great for detail work, eyes, buttons, whatever. And wash and completely rinse the fig's b4 paints, tremedous help for smooth, consistent paints.

A major tip: Before you use a sealer on a finished model always test it first. There is nothing like destroying a freshly painted and finished figure by applying a finale sealer coat and realizing you just ruined it with a milky sealer.
