I think typically, paint apps won't change color when you dye a figure. So you can drop a CG in black dye and keep the Sigil and silver paint apps intact. Unfortunately I've also heard that there will always be bleed off from a dyed figure (IE: Whatever it touches for a long period of time will get dye on it too)
Mind you I've never done this and everything I just stated is second hand info so it's highly possible that I'm wrong. Three big things to know: 1) The hard plastic on your figure is harder to dye than the soft plastic. It takes longer for the color to sink in, & it's prone to warping if you have your water too hot for too long. 2) Keep the parts off the bottom of the pot. 3) You can only go darker. That is, unless the brighteners & color removers RIT makes will work on these plastics. I haven't tried. I use a 2 quart crock pot (think it was $10.88 at Walmart) & a strainer. Takes longer, but it keeps me out of the kitchen & is much less likely to damage the hard plastics. I've run into situations with color as described by the OP. My guess is either air bubbles were clinging to the figure as it was dyed, or the dye is impaired by certain chemicals present in the plastic. Unless all compounds used to make these plastics are truely & completely homogeneous, there could theoretically be pockets in the plastic of . . . I dunno. Anyway, yeah I've had them too. Sometimes it comes out cool, & sometimes it can screw you over.

Tell me about it, I'm sick of paint chipping or rubbing off. Cool custom, the black/green looks awesome.

I think the reason it still has a green tint to it is cause the dye didn't completely take to plastic and cause the plastic was yellow before it now made it look green (I hope I'm not just repeatin what someone already said). Looks good man! I plan on doin something like this wit a CC.

I love RIT dye, although i've only tried the powder.I use it for my Sigma 6 customs.A few tips i've learned(not sure if anyone else as said these)
When you are dying the fig. don't let the dye splash or drip on the stove or floor. It will dye anything it touches(including you) To keep it from dripping off the fig. After you are done dying it,just put it under some running water and it will wash away the dye that has built up in the joints. Also,it won't dye everything. Some plastics want take.My Sigma 6 (cobra) Firefly's shin guards wouldn't take the dye. |

Another thing to keep in mind...
You will have to remove your figure from the dye, let it cool, reposition the arms and legs and then re-dye if you want the joints to be completely re-colored. As for the dye bleeding, I assume that if you use a sealer on the figure, this should be enough to keep this from happening. |
