I almost picked some up the other night. But, it looked really messy and I worried about stories I read of figures not coming out the right color or colors being runny. However, I want to try it at least for a base color for joints because the paint chipping with my customs is sooooooo annoying. Please do share your experience details.

I think typically, paint apps won't change color when you dye a figure. So you can drop a CG in black dye and keep the Sigil and silver paint apps intact. Unfortunately I've also heard that there will always be bleed off from a dyed figure (IE: Whatever it touches for a long period of time will get dye on it too)
Mind you I've never done this and everything I just stated is second hand info so it's highly possible that I'm wrong. |

Know it, love it and use it! There's also a liquid, but I've never tried it. Word of advice, buy your own pot, and be careful if you have a white stove, cause it stains and it'll piss off your wife, GF or Mom if you get it on the stove and/or counter. I have a hot plate so if I do it, it's in my basement and I wont ruin anything besides my own stuff... I'd also get a strainer, so you can hold the figure parts, that way they don't touch the pot, if they touch the pot for too long, they'll warp and melt. It's trial and error and if you're doing black it has to be boiling, or it'll come out purple. Hope that helps for those asking... If anything practice on old crappy figures first so you don't ruin any good ones.. ;) |

Very simple. I believe the golden rule is you can only go darker. Second rule, do not heat up the water over simmering (NO BOIL). Saying that, take a pot (that you can ruin) and a metal strainer (does not ruin).
Fill up the pot of water to the top. You might remove some water in the next few steps. Wait for the water to simmer. Then lower to about 1/4th of power When water starts to simmer, add approx 1/3 RIT dye (as in 1/3 RIT and 2/3 water) . The more RIT you add the darker the figure. Be patient and if you have to add more later on for desired color, then do so. You CAN'T go lighter. Now for the figure. I found that disassembling the figure works best. Take parts that you want dyed and place them all in the strainer. Lower the strainer in the pot of RIT and water and let soak while keeping power on ¼th Do NOT go too hot or your parts will be disfigured. Also make sure strainer is not touching bottom of pan. Depending on the desired color you want, the parts could take from 15 minutes to 1 hour and 15 minutes. I soak for 60 minutes for blacked out colors. I can’t take credit for all this. A fellow tanker gave me a link (trying to find it for ya) to RIT dying. I made several modifications because their guidelines were not accurate in my experience. And yes, for the first few weeks. Minor amount of dye may come off figure if left on side (does not effect figure‘s appearance). Stand the figure up and you won’t have a problem.
