I cannot even begin to understand why there is always 1 or 2 douchebags on any forum. If someone posts something and you you just can't freaking stand it for some reason, then just say "MAN THAT SUCKS". Why does it always have to be the beat around the bush and act like an a$$ routine every time? I can take a tip here or there, but please just leave the dumba$$ remarks to yourself. I can even take a joke comment....HELL, I even like to joke around from time to time. I just hate that there are all these "I want to be a toy reviewer" types that have nothing better to do with there time then to bash on other peoples stuff just because they can't seem to get there @#^% together.
Just a little rant. No harm intended. Just wanted to let off some steam. I love you all!!

I see good customs all the time that i don't like. I keep my fat mouth shut. The poster put effort into it and who am i to tell them their hard work is no good? If I like something i will make my comments "Oh wow, oh cool, awesome" whatever, if I don't I usually don't post in that thread.
The only thing that the false praise is doing is perhaps encouraging them to keep going, instead of shooting them down like negative replies are doing, potentially discouraging them from trial and error improvement. If anything, if the figure sucks, at least they're getting encouragement and there's potential to do better next time. Perhaps I have more faith in people on here who are willing to share and discuss their niche hobby, but I am disappointed when people could be cruel just for the sake of being mean. You don't have to sugar coat things, but you can be tactful and not post crappy responses. |

I see your viewpoint but I feel inclined to point out that you have posted your art project/custom on the internet.
that is the equivelent of putting graffitti on city hall and signing it, saying look at what I did. as great as it may be, someone is gonna have something stupid to say... in addition, and I know I am gonna get slammed for this, you posted it on what is essentially a nerd forum.....hey I am a nerd for this stuff and I admit it. But if there is one group of people that will get angry over stuff that really doesn't matter, it's nerds. So in summation if your custom sucks, it's really there problem, not yours. but you did select to post your custom on a public forum. (btw, I have never seen any of your customs so this isn't a commentary on what may or may not be the pimpest custom skill ever...or maybe the worst..) I don't see the payoff. Sure, they may be naive in thinking their work is awesome, and are just proud to share it with someone because the people they may live with, or their friends, may not be into GI Joe. I personally post my customs to a) get feedback and share something dear to me with others who share the same interest, but b) to share my ideas and add to the customizer's idea pool, because I sure as shit value other's ideas, and I think it helps to make better customs all around if people can share their efforts and tricks. Not everything may work, but if something is tested by someone else and doesn't work, then I've saved myself the trouble, and learned from their work. If anything, I think I benefit from other people trying things I haven't or don't have the parts to... It saves me the "R&D", if you will, and a lot of money, cause customizing isn't cheap. |

But shouldn't "good" be up to the person leaving the criticism? I certainly agree that an honest criticism should be left uncontested when it comes to customs, but isn't that the point of the thread-maker? I keep silent when a custom looks like crap, but also see a fairly large amount of lip serive is being paid to the customizer simply because he or she chose to engage in the practice of customizing. Sometimes certain figures should be customized when the person attmpting it is capable of actualy customizing the figure they customize, rather than just being the person who got to the figure before the rest of us and screwed it up. I understand the whole "those who can't do" perspective, but surely there are customs that come up for criticism that really do suck a big fat one. I think this is what the thread starter is addressing. -And if he or she is not, they they need only speak up to correct the misconception. I'll shut up if such is not the case. I'm not even saying that a bad customizer shouldn't be allowed to do custom work. What a person finds or buys on his own is up to he or she to decide.
I don't see why everyone has to just dole out judgment on here, on every little thing... especially people's customs, however "successful" or not. Not everyone is as talented as everyone else, but why pick on the lesser-talented people? It's like picking on handicapped children, I don't see the merit. I dunno, I'm just saying, why can't people just take the chip off their shoulder for their fellow tanker? Biting at Hasbro is one thing, but pissing on someone's work is just that: pissing on them for the sake of it. |

I would rather get a negative comment (assuming they tell you why they don't like it) than no comment. If I didn't want to learn what I was doing wrong I would just show them to my 5 yr old son and not post pictures of them anywhere.

I like to use the example of my filmmaking (and I use that term very lightly with what I do). I have posted videos on Youtube and gotten the good and bad with that. Some guys say "Oh, this video is awesome!" and some guys say "The chick in this video is fugly and the video is retarded." Now, if someone says "I think that the lighting is lacking" or "the camera angle would have served you better here..." Then those are comments I can live with. I usually dismiss the short, kurt, and mindless 3AM bollocks that usually comes out of somebody's mouth after an all night binge of Red Alert and Ho-hos. (No offense to the threadstarter... I wasn't talking about you.) Usually, short answer aren't constructive criticism. Just flaming. Ignoring a troll is the only way to make them go away.

comments on threads first have to be there. i hate when you see a few hundred veiws on a custom thread and only one or two people even take the time to put a comment.
