Updated shot:
Here's a Spaceport playset I built for my kids....and myself. While not entirely Joe related, I wanted something with a gritty and overcrowded scifi feel that could act as a sort of offworld truckstop for all 3.75" figure lines to mingle at. I casually started working on it about a year ago and just let it grow building by building. The whole thing is basically 99% wood construction, mostly 5/8" or 3/4" plywood along with various solid wood shapes. For me, foamcore is fine for displays but if I'm putting this much work into something then it's going to damn well be strong enough for a 6 & 9 (or 39) year old to actually PLAY on. Most all of the little doo-dads and detail props are permanently attached so I don't have to worry about a miniature glass of blue alien scotch or a bowl of soup winding up sucked into the vacuum cleaner. The entire Spaceport consists of a bar, a motel, a robo-mart, a gun shop, a diner, a taco stand, a toy store, a medical center, convenience store, a traffic control room, a court/senate chamber, a jail house and a cargo bay along with numerous landing platforms, charging stations, ramps and staircases spread throughout. Most of the buildings have their own separate led lighting also so if you want to play in the bar then you don't have to light up everything else, unless you want to. The entire spaceport is over 6 feet long, 4 feet wide and about 5 feet tall. I'll admit that it's technically still a work in progress, in fact I built and added the street level ice machine last nite, but I'll probably always be adding more to it or around it over the years so it's close enough to "finished" as it is. Since it's so freakin' big I'll break up the pics into each section views for the posts. Here's most of the exterior: Last edited by Empire; 01-14-2015 at 10:58 PM.. |

This is the best thing anyone on here has ever built, and I've seen a lot of shit here over the years. Words will not do it justice. It is spectacular.

Easily one of the best sci-fi hangars I'll ever see. This so cool!
Congrats for the great masterpiece. |

Welcome to Hisstank.
That's one hell of a play set you built there.

This is utterly astounding and should be front paged on every toy site there is. Thank you for sharing it.

Here's Mel's Diner (I watched Alice a lot when I was a kid)
I don't know if it's just the physical location of this being on the outside corner of the spaceport but it gets a ton of play from my boys. But all they really do is have Tunnel Rat or Walrus Man sitting there drinking coffee or eating spaghetti.....I dunno, maybe it's like the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs or the diner scene in Spaceballs. |
