Here are some teaser images of a 25th Anniversary style Chuckles custom figure I collaborated on with fellow forum member Spigou, although "collaborated" might be giving myself too much credit... I did the rough unskilled work (taking the base figures apart, doing rough beveling of the wrist and elbow posts) while he did all of the hard work: painting the itty-bitty flowers on Chuckles' shirt and subsequently ruining his eyesight (ha ha) and all the paint ops in general, doing the fine Dremel-ing, and customizing the shoulder harness and knife-sheath.
The colour scheme was inspired by Chuckles' appearance in the 1987 movie and in the 1980s comics, as seen below: We leaned towards the slightly orange flower pattern of the cartoon instead of the outright bright pink of the comic book. Strangely enough, I don't think Chuckles has ever been depicted in the comics or in the cartoons wearing his gaudy original toy colours, which is why we've always thought of the white-shirted Chuckles as the definitive version. Spigou is considering re-working the hip joints, to give the figure a much wider, Microman-style, range of motion which will allow for deeper stances. Pics, of course, if and when that happens, will be posted here. |

Thanks for the comments guys!
EDIT: And I know I'm biased, but I prefer our custom figure over the actual toy that's set to be released later this year by Hasbro, which looks nothing like the character in any prior incarnation (I'd only seen the high-res image of the actual Hasbro Chuckles today... how could they get the character so wrong?): Last edited by zuludelta; 03-16-2009 at 06:06 AM.. |

Really appreciate the responses darkshadow, samantha, percehonson, and arc30.
[here's where I go on a coffee-fueled rant... feel free to ignore this part] I was really sorely disappointed upon seeing Hasbro's Chuckles figure. Our Chuckles custom project was initially something to tide us over until a 25th Anniversary-style Chuckles figure was released, but seeing images of the official product, I think, we're looking at the custom as an actual replacement instead of just something to keep us busy. The only thing the official Hasbro release has going for it is the all-new head sculpt, which saves it from being dumped into the same category as other obvious cash-in, afterthought figures like the Gung-Ho twins (otherwise known as 25th anniversary Leatherneck and Cutter) and the 3,076 Storm-Shadow variants (now with a slightly different paint-job!). I guess what annoys me about the whole thing is that Hasbro has the tooling and the talent to make some pretty impressive figures deserving of the "25th Anniversary" label (The Snow-Job, B.A.T., and Airborne figures are the first to come to mind), toys that are faithful (if not in fact, at least in intent) to the original designs but still manage to offer something new, but lately, they seem content to cobble together throwaway product in the hopes that consumer nostalgia will be enough to mitigate the fact that some of their releases are really pretty crappy. |

Nice custom. Chuckles is an awesome character, but it's always bothered me how his pants were tucked into his boots. Sure, the Hawaiian shirt says he's a cool, not-an-undercover-agent sort of guy, but who is he fooling with the knife strapped to his army green trousers? Oh... and I like the blue pants that you gave him.
As for the Hasbro... I don't mind it. I've got a Hawaiian shirt just like it! Maybe I'll be Chuckles for Halloween. |
