If you were constructing a building, a headquarters perhaps, would you use Foamcore or Styrene for floors and walls?
I've used styrene quite a bit lately, so I know what I can do with it. I've never used foamcore, but I glanced at some the other day while in Hobby Lobby. (Note: Hobby Lobby does NOT sell styrene!) Basically: 1) How easy is foamcore to cut and what do you cut it with? X-acto knife? Score and snap? 2) How does foamcore take to glue and what kind? 3) How does foamcore take to paint and what kind? Can I spray paint it? 4) Price of foamcore vs. price of styrene? Once again, any help is much appreciated!

foamcore is real easy to use, I've found an X-acto and straight edge works well, I've used hot glue on my stuff, you can get a small cheap $2-5 glue gun at WM and a pack of 50 or so glue sticks for about the same price, probably cheaper..
You can spray paint it, you can brush paint it, but I'd do it in light coats, it iscovered in paper.. so if you soak it in spray paint, it might warp. Hope that helps... -Joe |

I hate foamcore. I don't find it easy to cut with at all. Everyonce in awhile you'll get a hard blob in your cut path. You want to score it and then cut all the way thru. Don't score and snap. It's a pain in the ass to cut. I've used x-acto knives and just hate it.
It'll take spraypaint, just have to keep going over it. Always had a problem with glue, doesn't like to glue. I've used pins and small nails to hold pieces together.

oh.. here's one of my first projects using foamcore:
I went the cheap and easy rout and just taped the corners and then glued them in the inside, but the tape showed.. the second lil' tower I made for a friend I didn't tape but don't have pictures on that one.. I used wall spackle to fill in the holes and edges so it looked like a seamless wall... |

I've got one for and one against.
I like the fact that it's lightweight, and the thickness is good for floors and walls. If it's not going to take to paint and glue, it won't be worth it.

If you're careful, and patient, with the cutting it can work for floors and walls. But if you want a nice clean end, it's not the best. I wouldn't even attempt to cut a 45 angle to miter the ends together.
I've just never had good luck with cutting the stuff.

Hhhhmmm...I wonder if I can just use foam core BETWEEN Styrene, just to give the floors and walls the thickness and rigidity I want? Because I want to be able to glue things to the floors and walls. Just do it this way for the outter walls and floors?

That would work, then you wouldn't have to worry about the edges of the foam core being exact or looking good, as the stryene would be covering it up. Foamcore would be perfect in that usage.

One of these days I'll post the bunker I made out of foamcore.

The main thing I'm concerned about is the base floor, because styrene still has flexibility. I don't want to pick it up and have the floor flex and everything fall apart. The inner walls, I think I can get away with just styrene walls and just put sort of a shelf across the top to give the illusion of a little thickness. The outter wall, I want to give the appearance of impenetrable thick metal.
