After over a year in production I can honestly say my USS Flagg is finished. Well, it's "done enough". There are a few small details left. Plus I know I will be always adding parts and upgrading others. Some things are still in the works, such as the arrestor cables. I know exactly how I will do them, just waiting for the right parts.
I was really hoping I could bring this monster to JoeCon in New Orleans earlier this year, but with the job I have right now I couldn't even afford the gas. Depending on where it will be held next year, I plan to cram it in the back of my Sentra and show it off somehow. It started over a year ago when I went to JoeCon 2011 in Orlando. I bought a fistful of those bright red missiles from a dealer selling used parts. Then I said to my brother, "You know, I'm sure I could build the rest of the Flagg myself". So, a year later, here are the stats: It measures in at a full 12 feet long (original 7.5 feet). It's over 4 feet across at it's widest part. The landing runway is 8 feet long. The takeoff strip is 5 from blast deflector to tip of the bow. The flight deck is 1 foot off the ground. The deck is made up of six removable panels which line up and stay straight with the help of small tabs on the underside. The entire thing is made of wood. One exception- the bow is thin sheet plastic. Even thin wood wouldn't bend enough to form the curve. The windows in the tower are plexiglass. The bodies of the lifeboats and Admiral's Launch are simply cheap plastic toy boats. I wanted to expand on the original as much as possible while keeping this thing as close to the original as possible. Studied plenty of photos of the original Nimitz class aircraft carriers it was styled after, but just as many pictures of the toy itself. |

The biggest difference between this boat and the 80's original is that this one is in fact a carrier. Meaning it can house three full size Skystrikers or several smaller planes below the flight deck. The elevator is just large enough for a plane to roll onto. By pulling a thin rope on the side of the deck, the elevator raises and lowers. This works by a series of small pulley wheels throughout the mid-section.
One jet simply rolls straight into the hangar bay from the lowered platform. There isn't realistically enough room for the other two planes to turn a sharp ninety degrees in the hangar to reach the platform, so a large circular turntable can rotate the plane a full 360 degrees. This enables them to park easily, either backed in or nose-first. A short ladder on the starboard wall of the hangar bay leads to a square crawlspace opening near the roof. From there, evacuees can go left or right into the two lifeboats. The boats can then be lowered down to sea level from retractable cables (those spring-loaded key chains). An opening in the front leads to the bow section, while two in the tail end lead to the tower and stern sections of the ship. |

The bow section is really just a big cargo hold for now. In the future I may add a few removable walls and break it into three smaller rooms. As for now, it does provide a nice open space for a dojo and a good size rec room.
After entering from the hangar bay, figures can step down to the cargo hold or walk left or right along the elevated walkway. At the end of each walkway is a small opening that leads to the cannon platform. From there, stairs lead to the flight deck. Last edited by WarrenCR3; 09-15-2012 at 10:33 AM.. |

I don't think anyone ever is going to top this thing. Must have been one heck of a labor of love. On my phone I can see how amazing it is, can't wait to see it on my big screen

A lot going on back here. Whether coming into the stern section from the hangar bay or the gangplank walkway, the first room you enter has a nice framed photo of the ship and a side-view map of the ship. Then a long hallway with five more rooms on the left and right. I have a ready room for briefing the pilots, an armory, a sick bay, a gym, and a brig. The brig has a cell door, but the other four rooms are interchangeable. All furniture and pictures on the wall are movable. The Picture frames all have magnets on the back of them and can be rearranged anywhere else on the ship.
Then another hallway leads to the engineering section, as well as two more cannon platforms and stairs up to the flight deck. |

Most of the action is still in the island (the tower). I tried to keep the original design in mind for the upper two floors while adding three more rooms below deck. The bridge, combat control and radio/communication rooms are all in the usual places. A small room in the center of the main floor was originally a small armory. Since I already have one down below, it is now the chart room (maps). The green console in that room is actually the battery compartment for the bottom floor.
Oh yeah, this thing light up. Each of the three computer consoles also have a part that lights up. There are fifteen tiny light bulbs throughout the tower, powered by two separate battery packs. The other pack is behind a small removable panel near the roof. I wish the night photos were better. The LCD screen on my camera is cracked, so I have to just point, click, and keep my fingers crossed. I also insisted that the top observation decks be connected so figures could walk around the back end of the tower and get to the other side. Also, I plan on making a side wall that covers the whole starboard wall of the island. All three floors. More than likely held on by some strong magnets. |

Well, not sure where to go from here. I've had plans for something that's a cross between a terror-drome and a tactical battle platform. Plus, I do like the design of the Cobra Dreadnaught submarine from the IDW comics. Me and my brother do still play the GI Joe Trading Card Game on occasion, and I have made dozens of custom cards for that game. Plus, I have done many custom GI Joe Combat Heroes prior to this. I just may make a three foot long Flagg for those figures. This is the first of this size and scale I've done.
