I've been "lurking" here for a few months, checking out the awesome customs and getting inspiration/ideas from a lot of members. But this is a totally unnatural thing for me... I don't collect GI Joe, and the few 25th figures that I've bought have been taken apart for Star Wars custom parts... but for some reason, I really wanted to make a figure of the GI Joe ninja, Kamakura. I started out with a red ninja, and didn't like a few things... the large, bulky belt/sash had to go, as well as the crappy ginormous ninja sword. So, I dremeled off the sash, and resculpted the tunic... bringing it down a little lower, and making it fold over to the other side. I added a new, thinner sash belt with a tie. Then, I scratch built a newer, thinner sword out of some thin styrene plastic.

That is nice and clean looking, good job. What did you do to the torso? It's a good look as opposed to simple repaints (such as the one I did).

Thanks for the welcome and the comments.
As for the torso, I dremeled off the sash and the bottom of the tunic. I used Fixit Sculpt to add a new, longer tunic since I hated the one on the ninja originally, I thought it was too short. As for the sash, I took one of those stupid clear rubber bands that Hasbro loves to put on SW figures and cut it open, then wrapped it around his waist twice. I took a second one, cut it, and tied it in a knot... cut the knot flat on the back side, glued it in place, and then trimmed the two ends that hung down. I also used one of those rubber bands for the edging on the tunic. A little gray paint to match the facemask, and I was done. |
