It sounds like it needs to be thinned. Are you using any acrylic thinner like the X-20A thinner by Tamiya? I've had great success with all the Tamiya stuff but it "always" needs to be thinned. Haven't used their yellow but I have used nearly all the greys, browns, blacks, blues and red ...never had an issue (as long as I thinned it). Usually a 1/1 ratio for brush painting. If I'm airbrushing it I can use a 1/1 or even 2/1 ratio of thinner to paint. Work with it and see what works best for you. And yes, light colors will usually need several coats to look good. Be patient and it will look great.

Do not use Tamiya paint on the GI joes any more. They will not work and yes it will clump up. The best way to paint something yellow I found was using a white flat paint or white primer as a base coat. Good luck!

You always want a light base, to paint yellow. A light colored primer is best. Model Master's acrylic grey primer is light enough to use under just about anything. I've only used Tamiya paint, once. I didn't like the way it airbrushed, so I went back to Model Master.
Vallejo also makes nice model paint, that goes on smooth, and dries dead flat. You'll have to prime under it, first. I've had no luck getting it to stick to unprimed toy plastic. |

someone mentioned they did a brown base-coat over a figure and then the yellow worked fine. I did about twenty or more thin coats of yellow (I just use the cheap wal-mart stuff) on Gnawgahyde's jacket giving plenty of drying time between coats. Eventually it stayed yellow (he's down in the lower right corner)

Using the Biege.tan yellow build up is how I paint yellows.. especially on darker colors.. it will go on bright and you won't have to use as many coats..
As for the clumping.. like somone else said, it could be old stock, but if not then try adding future floor wax to your paints.. it will thin them out for smooth application and keep the paints from drying out longer. i would suggest using little drops til you get the consisitancy you want..otherwise you will thin it down too much and it becomes a wash. LOL
