Cause they got sent on a suicide mission to some jungle where they where attacked by vampire-esque soldiers who wouldnt stay dead unless you like cut off thier heads and took out their hearts.
Anyway they got cornered in some underground bunker, the place was set to blow sky high and the only way to survive was to bust open some vacts with gold liquid that basically encases your entire body in gold armor plating.
The comic was called Wetworks and was published by Image comics in what history now calls "the good ol days."
