sometimes i think parents don't realize how capable thier kids are when given proper instruction and supervision. i know many think i'm nuts for starting them out with joes at 3 and painting at 4 but they really do learn quickly and if instructed to properly respect the process and materials, a 4yr old is fully capable of repainting a vehicle without much assistance. they hated the masks at first but when i pointed out how the paint overspray floats in the wind (very easy to demostrate) and explain how it's dangerous to breath that in, they get it.
i wish i had done this type of stuff with my father but alas, i never really had much of a father figure in my formative years but thats another story for another time. i'm doing now what i wanted to do at thier age and thats more important than the actual toys themselves, priceless really. here is our gi joe desert mobat. my son sees my desert vamp in my display and is always aking to play with it but i keep saying that one just for display. we had an extra mobat (i got a bunch of these for dirt cheap on ebay) and he grabbed that and said that was the next one and wanted it in the same desert color. the mobat is easy to take apart and for the most part, easy to paint. the wheels are teh most difficult part really. putting it back together however can be tricky in making sure it still works afterward. the little guy painted the main body shell, turret cover and bottom shell. i went over it afterward and also the small parts. first off, the krylon ultra flat tan does not adhear to plastic as well despite being part of the fusion line. consequently it's not nearly as durable. we used an entire can of paint to coat this puppy. i bought the reproduction stickers from jruben and they look very nice. it was a bit odd to seem them all in mostly the correct places. the average mobat you get on ebay has tons of sticker placement errors. i wanted tgo get pictures of paitning but we had to do this one at night and in the back stair well due to wind and drizzle. interesting tid bit, i deliberatly did not show them the mobat actually moved on its own. they just thought it was a tank that was hard to push. i saved this little gem for a nice weekend day and surprised them by popping off the bottom panel, putting batteries in it and letting them race (like a pair of turtles) across the floor. the little guys jaw dropped! he spent the rest of the day watching them cralw over small books, go across the room and sometimes battle themselves. if you want to enjoy a ood simple toy with your little kids, the mobat is a good one to do it with. they can be found cheaply on ebay and are easy to paint. draw back is they only fit one figure and not much of him really.

I appreciate your thread and your approach to teaching kids! They really are capable of much more than we give them credit for especially with patient instruction and appropriate supervision. My son is due in December, and I have been saving my original joes for him!
