I know some of the custom touches below are similar to what Vidmouse recently posted, and all I can say is:
1) I was a little bummed that I didn't post pics earlier, when I completed the mods about a week or so ago. Oh well, such is life with two very young kids: it's hard to carve out time to snap up pics and stuff. 2) Hey, great minds think alike! I'm glad to see I wasn't the only one who thought about panel-lining this bird or painting in the details on the engine. In any case, here's the pics: After all those years of panel-lining and stickering up Macross Valks and Mospeada Legiosses, I just had to apply those talents to the Skystriker. The biggest difference between panel-lining those and the Skystriker is that the panel-lines on the Skystriker are much deeper. It was a little trickier, and I had to probably go over the panel-lines a few times. But I'm fairly happy with the results. The underside portion, especially the parts below the cockpit, were much easier to fill in. Reminded me very much of filling out the panel-lines on a Yamato 1/48 Macross Valk. For those curious, I used a black Micron pen (either .01 or .005, not sure) to do the panel-lining. You can usually find these for sale at a higher-end art supply store. One piece of advice: make sure you do NOT use the pen directly perpendicular to the surface. If you do, you risk damaging the pen's tip and making it no longer usable (You might force the tip into the body of the pen). Always use the pen at an angle to the panel-line, similar to how you would do a paint-brush stroke. While I'm showing the underside, I also painted silver the tips of the gunpod (where the bullets would shoot out of) to make them stand out a little more: After seeing the engines being one solid drab grey, I had to fill them in and add a few more details to make 'em "pop": I basically gave the engines a black wash, to make it look a little more dirty. And then used some additional black, silver, gold, and red paint to fill in some of the details. I used these colors since I wanted the details to really shine through, and these were the only paints I had available in my personal stash to make those details truly pop. More custom touches and pics of Ace in the next post! Last edited by Mog; 03-29-2020 at 12:20 AM.. |

Moving on to the nose, I added a little bit of black paint to the nose gun tip to make it stand out some and to make look a little more used:
In the pic above, you can also see that I filled in the gaps between the canopy and the black and red stripes with some additional black paint. I wasn't a fan of the gaps between the front stripe stickers and the two stripe stickers that run along the side. Again, a little detail that makes the plane look less toy-like. Finally, the custom touches to Ace: I was debating whether to use the stock Ace or the custom one I did using the comic pack version. The problem with the comic pack one is that he is a little bit too tall to sit in the cockpit and grab the controls. Plus, with the custom paint job I gave him, he would probably have chipped on the arms/shoulders, when he brushes up against the cockpit sides. So, I used the stock Ace. However, I did do the following custom touches: 1) I wasn't feeling the high-tech helmet they gave the stock Ace, and I didn't like how it was so opaque you couldn't see Ace's face or eyes behind it. So, I gave him the custom helmet (a slightly repainted helmet from the Star Wars Luke/Mara comic pack) I originally made for my old custom Ace. 2) I was having a hell of a time getting the stock hands to grab the controls, so I replaced the hands with the black-painted hands from my comic-pack Ace. Now he can easily grab the controls of the Skystriker. For those wondering about the stock helmet, don't worry. I found a good use for the air hose on that thing: For those of you who are very observant, yes, I rectified a major oversight on Hasbro's part and added a Cobra kill-marks sticker to the Skystriker: A few more comments and pics to follow. . . When I first saw the box for the Skystriker, I was worried it was going to be a bit on the small side (especially if I was gonna place it next to the X-19).
. . . . . . . . . Yeah, my worries were totally unfounded: Probably my biggest gripe with the stock Skystriker is that I really wish they had mirror-imaged some of the stickers they provided, like the slanted 100, the RESCUE arrows, and the eagle tailfin art. I really don't like that the left and right sides of the plane don't look similar. In any case, that's all I have for now. Thanks for tolerating my long-winded posts. Feel free to post any comments, questions, or critiques. Last edited by Mog; 03-29-2020 at 12:27 AM.. |
