So. I just starting customizing yesterday. I have lots of extraneous figures lying around and decided to try some things. This is a Duke repaint. I wanted to try and give him a more naturalistic paint job, that didn't feel so cartoony. What do you guys think?

I think its awesome, I never really felt duke had a very much of an army feeling to him with the brown shirt. This definatly brings his outfit out as something more plausible to me. Very cool! Keep them coming!

To be honest, he is a bit too contrasty. The colors are so far different, that it looks a little drastic. Try using a base color, and then darkening it just a tad for the washes. Other than that, not bad for your first go! I'm sure that the more you do, the more you learn, and then the more you will be willing to do even crazier things! Which, is never bad.

Eopie Herder: I feel that. I understand what your saying, especially in these pictures. I think in real life he feels a lot less contrasty. But you are right.
Does anyone have any advice for taking photos of the figures that does the paint job justice? I have been snapping photos all damn morning and getting nowhere. As for the paint job. I am definately going to try to tone down the contrast next time |

I like what you did with his uniform, but the washes on the skin don't really do it for me.

I was going for a dirty look on his hands, but it just looks sloppy. I can definately work on that. Good feedback so far guys. Thanks. It helps to have other people's eye on this stuff.

Looks good to me. I agree about the skin, though. I used to paint the base, wash, highlight method for everything. Now I pretty much keep it a simple base color. The technique you used works really well on the clothes though.
For pictures, you can try a cheap method or go all out. |
