Project #1 - Cobra Stinger:
This was my favorite of the 3 that I did. I was tempted to paint the roof, doors, wheels and other grey parts black, but once I snapped those pieces on the newly painted body I thought that it didn't need any other touch ups. If I missed painting any areas, I haven't noticed them...then again the black plastic helps a lot. Paint went on and dried smooth...very satisfied with this one. You can probably tell in some of the pics that I didn't remove the old decals before painting. I didn't have very good luck getting that old sticker residue off the other 2 projects, so I thought I'd see how it'd look just painting over the decals. It's not bad in my opinion, but next time I'll try a little harder to get them completely removed before painting. On the flip side however, if I can ever get my hands on some Stinger labels I can just re-apply those over the painted originals! Still waiting on my Cobra labels to come from GIJoe Heaven (thanks for the reference guys, I nearly cleaned him out!). I'll snap new photos once the labels are applied, perhaps even add some troops operating the jeep. I also need to come up with a snazzy name for it too. Hmm...where to begin?

Project #2 - Checkpoint Alpha playset
I wanted to try my hand at customizing something that I haven't seen anyone else do. I browsed a lot of the photos here and as well as at Joecustoms.com and I didn't see anyone tackle this neat little playset. Again, I had a hard time removing the large stickers on the tower portion of the playset. Again, I'd love to find an un-used sticker sheet for this as I love the "Authorized Personell Only" sticker on the top/front of the tower. Hopefully it'll look a little better once those Cobra decals come in too. Overall, not bad. It didn't come out quite like I was hoping for - but being a complete beginner I'm still satisfied.

Project #3 - VAMP jeep:
Of the 3 I did, these one is my least favorite. You can probably see in some of the photos that I didn't do the best job taping off around the dash. Plus you can sell the olive green plastic showing through in a few small areas where the paint didn't quite get down in the cracks. Another thing that somewhat puzzled me is on the passenger's side portion of the hood, near the "windshield". When I was applying the matte clear coat, a small portion started to frost up. I read on the can where it said that would happen if you applied too much in one area...but I was using a sweeping motion and didn't spray much in any one area. Once it dried, the paint cracked. It looks similiar to very dry mud that has cracked apart into little chunks. Since it's my first attempt I'm not too worried, but I would like to know what went wrong. I didn't have any problems applying the matte clear coat to the Stinger or Checkpoint Alpha. Since it's a military vehicle, I'm not concerned though as you wouldn't expect to see showroom shiny paint on vehicles such as these. Plus, using the matte clear coat it does help to hide that small area anyhow since the blue is dull and not shiny.

Of the 3 that I did, the Stinger was definately my favorite. It was a lot of fun, though I did manage to get some of the blue spray paint mist on the floor of our new garage. I guess next time I'll roll out more of that thick brown craft paper! I do look forward to doing some more in the near future...just gotta wait until I can find some more good junkers to practice on. I've got a decent Hammerhead that I got for about $20 that I'm tempted to tackle...but that might be biting off more than I can chew at the moment.
At least my wife was supportive of this little "job". Always a plus when the wife gives you the thumbs up to anything hobby related! One question I have for you guys who may be reading this. How do you go about the small detailing? A paint pen? I think they look good, but I wanted to add some additional color in a few places, but I wasn't sure how to go about that. I'm also on the lookout for the remaining pieces to add to both the Stinger and VAMP. I'm hoping the missile rack and guns will help spice up the 2 jeeps as well. So, comments, points of advice? Bring 'em on!

Hey FW, great work!
For smaller details, a small paint brush and a bottle of Acrylic paint would do justice! You can buy Apple Barrel brand paint at Wal*Mart or any craft store for dirt cheap...typically around $0.99 - $1.49 for a bottle. You can also buy repro labels to snazz up your customs over at G.I.Joe Heaven. They're vinyl, so no worries on the paint smudging! All in all, great work, man! |

Thanks for the kind words/advice. I'm going to try and chip off some of that blue paint that got on the VAMP's tires later today. I'm gonna swing my Wal-Mart today to grab abother Sigma 6 Iron Grenadier so I'll look into the paint that you suggested while I'm there.
As for the labels, I've got an order coming in the mail from GIJoe Heaven as we speak!

Nice job Flywheels.
Heres some tips: The areas that the blue paint didn't get down into and the dash area...take the spray paint and spray some of it in the lid of the paint can. Then with a small brush apply it. Just don't put much on the brush at a time so it doesn't glob up. It will take a couple coats...but its an easy fix. Detailing is as CIAD stated...I use apple barrel paints and a small brush. It gets tedious at times...but gives it a little extra flare. As for the matte finish causing the paint to crackle...I've been there and done that. My actual thoughts on it is...the oil in the plastic. I have noticed it in some of my repaints that it does it in a couple spots...but not elsewhere. There could be more oil present in that part of the plastic, which could cause it. My way of fixing it: leave it be. It gives it a battle worn effect. You can also create this effect by changing the temperature of the paint...put the spray can in the fridge for a little bit...and the paint when sprayed will crackle. That is if you want this effect (such as barnacles on the hull of a ship).

you could try giving it a very light coat of primer first. might even try some krylon FUSION. its meant for plastic, so the oil problem shouldnt be a big deal.
i'm going to buy a humvee soon (either PTE or joe desert ops), and i will most likely do some painting on it. i'll let you know how it goes. (i have some experience painting RC car bodies and plastic model kits, so i know some trick or two!) also, have you tried to disassemble the parts you are painting? orare you just masking off areas not getting paint? try taking them apart. its more work but the end result is worth it.
