Different people prefer different "looks" for G.I. Joe customs.
I've done customs for various other types/brands of toys but will be starting G.I.Joe customs now. I was wondering what do most community members like to see? Flat paint applications the way Hasbro normally does their paint? Or using other painting techniques such as drybrushing and washes to add depth? I know I saw on another board's custom contest that drybrushing seemed discouraged. What do you guys say? |

I recently painted a TF Flint to look like the Original 1985 release, and went with the Hasbro look, but there was a part of me that wanted to detail the hell out of it. I didn't because I wanted it to fit in with the rest of them. I'll probably do another that has been detailed, just because I love to do it! Now, I've done a few custom Joe vehicles, and I weathered them like crazy. It doesn't fit with the rest, but in my opinion they look better...they look the way they should. It's how I would attack a model kit....can't help it have to do it that way. So just do what you want, and go nuts!

I can live with both styles. It's all personal preference, I guess. Hasbro has been using washes on their figures too (SS, Copperhead). Do whatever makes you happy because you can't please everyone.

I personally like my customs to look "factory", so they display well right along with all the figures. Some drybrushing and washes can look good, as long as they're not overdone, but I usually stay away from them. I would say, just try what works for you.

Totally my opinion as well. The contest you mention is mine, and there is more than one perspective that I had to take into consideration when drafting the rules. I personally don't really care for them, but I can certainly appreciate what they bring to the table in terms of detail and depth, especially when handled by someone with great technical skill. *looks sideways at Jin* |

i LOVE the look of drybrushing, LOVE IT!, but, like most others have said, when i make a custom i want it to fit right in with the Hasbro releases, and look as much as possible like they made it...and really, most clothes in real life (unless they are dirty) don't look the way drybrushing does on a fig...however, i will drybrush weapons...

Thanks for the input, guys. I prefer the greater color depth that drybrushing and washes give a figure, but just wanted to know what others in the community think. Hope when I eventually post mine you guys will enjoy them regardless of the techniques I employ.

I mostly go for solid colrs, but washes and drybrushing have their place. My catgirl kitbash got washes in certain areas to give her hair and fur a look similr to how she appears in my webcomic. One of the bashes I'm working on now got drybrushing on his legs, to give him that worn denim look on his jeans. I have another character planned that'll have jeans. His will be done with washes, to give a more faded look.
It really depends on what look you're going for. |

To me, dry-brushing is to make something look more authentic and to scale. I used to build many Tamiya 1:35th scale military models, and on those the technique was essential.
GI Joes on the other hand will never truly be accurate representations, so I don't believe dry-brushing is needed. But everyone is individual. If you think it looks good, go for it!

I'm not that great a customizer, so I aspire to the factory look. Especially when I have friends compare my customs to production figures, and they can't tell the differences. I intend to step up my skills. There's a gang of inspiration on the 'tank.
