I've seen several places on the web where people are questioning the price of the class, and not understanding how this years format will differ greatly from the class the previous year. I'd like to clarify a couple of things in the hopes that it will let you better understand the costs associated with it.
First of all, this class will be "hands on" for everyone who participates. For paying to attend the class, you will receive two cast "blank" heads and a backpack. After a very brief introduction, we'll be jumping right in learning how to sculpt add-ons to these base parts. We'll be using Apoxie sculpt as a medium. You will also receive a pair of professional sculpting tools that are yours to use and keep for each individual. I'm going to see about getting some small cannisters so that each participant can take home some of the leftover Apoxie as well, but if you have a pair of film cannisters, bring those to be certain. At the end of day one (a four hour class), all the parts will be set out to cure overnight to lead into day two. The necessity of allowing time for this epoxy to cure is why the class is broken in two days. Day two will get off to a very fast start (also a four hour class), in that we will immediately begin prepping two of the three parts you worked on the day before (any combination of 2 out of 3) and setting them up in mold boxes. You will be shown step-by-step how to set up your own mold boxes so that you can try it at home if you like. After the mold boxes are set up, we will be mixing and pouring silicone in those boxes and will be putting them under heat and pressure to cure. While they are curing, there will be a Q&A session covering pretty much anything related to the moldmaking/casting process. During the last 45 minutes of the class, I'll show you the demolding process for the parts you just made molds for, and you will leave the 2nd day with the parts you've modified and the molds you made for them. So, out of the class your getting: 2X resin heads 1 resin backpack sculpting lesson sculpting tools moldmaking lesson Q&A session molds of 2 modded parts of your choice |

Frankly X, that's a matter of opinion. Anyone whose ever actually forked out the money and done this before, knows that it isn't "easy" or "free" to do at this skill level.

How much is it for a 2 day eight hour class? I'm sorry I did not see a price in the post. It's in TX. right?

I signed up for the class but I was under the impression that a Hasbro Rep would be running the event like BotCon. So your saying there will be no Figure, just 2 heads and a backpack for $115.00?
I can understand how the class would help a ton of people learn about the casting process I just wish the Club posted this info sooner.

no aly is doing this on his own Destro he might pay MC something but this is Alys thing last yr he did it for free in his room.
Aly i never said it was free as in the materials needed as for skill level if they are just starting out your class can give a slight edge but they are all at the same level. soon this will be a thing that everyone will know how to do . just as in using green stuff. as there are ppl on the boards that will tell you step by step on how to do it with pics for cheap to free. Again, you are totally wrong X. I was actually asked by the GIJCC to put on the demonstration last year (2007), and the participant class this year (2008). The class I did in my room was in 2006, and was not free. I charged $3 for the demo, but you got to take away the heads that I made during the class. Another misconception is that I am charging for the class, but the facts are that the club set the price and is who you are paying.
Destro- The selling point of the class as I pointed out is that you'll be doing your own sculpting (with help, pointers, examples of techniques and how to use the tools given during that part of the class) and the second day you'll be learning how to set up your own mold boxes using the parts you sculpted. You're getting the parts, the tools, the sculpting material, the mold tutorial (which is actually one of the hardest things about making proper molds) and the molds (2 seperate molds) to take home. While it's not a free figure, I personally feel like that is pretty significant because if your happy with your sculpt, then you can head on home and cast those modded parts and sell/trade them until the molds wear out (up to 50 pulls/casts). The class will not cover the act of casting in any way, unless someone asks about it in the Q&A, but focus on the hardest part of the hobby which is making the molds using the minimum amount of material with the best possible parts resulting. |

ok I think this class is a great idea and if I was going I would be sure to take part in it. I have some friends who put on a "mini-con" in Memphis that was more than just your avrage con, it was classes in every aspect of creating and publishing your own comic.
You can read a how too all day long but it just isn't the same as the hands on instructions. Now for the first time I'm kind of upset about not being able to go. But the family does come first you know? |

Destro- Yes sir, both heads will fit 25th, and one is male with the other being female. I know that there is a shortage of female heads in total to choose from, so I hope we get some interesting pieces done by you guys.
E7S- I totally understand. I also understand that the class taking place on Wednesday and Thursday is hardship/deterrent for some folks, but I promise to do everything I can to make those who do attend feel like they recieve the maximum payoff for their investment. Hope to see you all there! |
