I curious if there was a Q&A at hasbro panel during the Joecon? I don't recall there was one. Or hisstank would have posted here.
Assuming there was none, why not? Would it be rude to ask your guest at Joecon some critical questions? Seriously? This is no 60 minutes, but some want anwers to what most perceive as flawed products. We all have the same questions like: Why is the Pit so pitiful? (That may be rude) Something polite like, Why is the Pit layout so non-sensical? Why is the Nigthraven without rolling wheels? Why is the Nightraven design a poor retro throw-back to the 80's? What were some of the design decisions behind those products? I can see such a event degenerate in to questioning like "Why does Destro not have blue trim like in issue 34, page 12. Etc...... Can hasbro ever give a straight answer. They speak through vagaries and obfuscation. With a panel in your face and the design team showcasing the outstanding Hiss2, are these the same people who made the questionable Pit and Nightraven? It's like night an day. Is it too much to ask for some answers from your most loyal customers. Or is questioning only reserved for stockholders? |

"Polite" is a matter of how the question is phrased. Lacing the question with your own personal (negative) opinion comes across as accusatory and yeah, is fairly rude to the folks that don't -have- to come to this convention, and who probably work pretty hard trying to create a balance between toys that appeal to kids and collectors (and when they're lucky both).
Remember, even the Hasbro "Joe team" doesn't have absolute control over what they do with the brand, or unlimited funds, time, and say-so to create every single thing they (or we) want exactly how we want. There are layers upon layers of decision making and factors that go into the final designs. The Night Raven/Rolling wheels question would be fine, I'd think, though I can probably tell you the answer you'd get (It was probably a costing decision). Asking about the design decisions behind the PIT isn't bad either. For example: "Why was it decided to make the Pit a "hybrid" vehicle/playset? A good number of fans would've definitely preferred a pure playset, and the vehicle mode doesn't really tie in to the movie at all." But getting up and saying: "Why does all this stuff you guys made suck so bad?" (in so many words) is in fact pretty rude and insulting. Would you enjoy someone verbally attacking you in a public forum? Hasbro's guys are still regular human beings underneath it all. That, and an exceptionally hostile crowd could very likely result in Hasbro not showing up for the next con, or at the very least not doing any sort of "Q&A" session. You don't have to be a fawning sycophant incapable of questioning any of their decisions, but they should be treated with the basic respect due most human beings that are just trying to do a job. From what I've seen/heard of the "worker bees" on Hasbro's Joe team, they're just as much fans of the franchise as we are, and would love to give us every single thing we want on a silver platter if they could. But they're not the guys that have the final say. If the higher-ups want "modernized" Joe over "Retro" Joe, they make modernized Joe or they lose their job, and try to squeeze in the "fan-service" items when and where they can. If the higher-ups say "Sorry, we're not going to invest in new tooling/refurbishing old tooling for a Skystriker/Flagg/Terror Drome/whatever." The the Joe team can't make it. That's just the way it is. Last edited by Jmacq1; 08-20-2009 at 09:39 PM.. |

Well, your bias toward both the PIT and the RAVEN is blatant. Perhaps those questions are relevant to your opinion and agenda but they would be extremely rude to ask people who put much time and effort into the designs. There are plenty of people here on the tank who are very impressed by the PIT and RAVEN, not to mention the kids across the country who will grow up with these toys and love them as much as (I assume) your love your JOE toys from your childhood.
Perhaps asking, "What decisions led your team to the final product of the PIT/Raven?" would be more appropriate. Insulting a team that has worked hard on the products, even if you don't like them, probably isn't a good way to accomplish whatever goal you may have, such as convincing Hasbro to make products more to your liking.

i understand your frustration with hasbro's answers to questions. i have sat through them for 4 straight years at the conventions. however, i think that the new product they presented speaks for itself. this is the direction they are going and if you want to buy, do, they are not forcing you. all i know is, i saw more kids this year there than any other year i've been. ultimately, the future of the line lies with them, not with us. if your bummed about the pit and it's comparison to the defiant, lets say, you'd be right in the lack of imagination. but if you compare version 1 straight arm snakes eyes to say, this guy, there's no comparison. and vs 1 se was my first figure ever in 82..... i took this photo at the con and i couldn't stop staring at this guy, along with countless others. if these continue to do well, the skys the limit. this guy: Last edited by A.V.A.C.; 02-03-2010 at 10:02 PM.. |

I was there, they did take questions and were VERY cool in answering them, and yes, you are rude. I guess I'm glad you were not there.

Luckily he was on the design team so he knew the answer: It was cost, Hasbro initially did not even WANT to INCLUDE WHEELS! It was to have the handle that went up and down and that's it. I guess they had to fight for wheels.. and by that time all the money was used up for the mold. While that in no way excuses it (come on, some foresight??), at least the reason is clear. Poor pre-planning and a lack of money, but at least the designers tried their best.
