I was just curious, let's say you buy something from ebay, and you win. Then you find out that the guy you have bought from is located in the same town or area you are in. Is there any way to avoid paying shipping charges and just meet the seller somewhere or do you have to pay the same shipping charges no matter where you are? As a buyer, have you ever asked the seller before? As a seller, have you ever been asked to do this?

there isn't an ebay rule regarding this. when you win the auction you are contractually obligated to pay for the shipping that is listed -- it is part of the auction terms. whether the seller agrees to meet you and save you the charge is completely up to him. it is best to negotiate any changes to the auction terms prior to bidding and winning.

If I see an item that is listed by somebody who lives close to me, I ask ahead of time if I could just pick it up before I decide to bid on it. Sometimes they say that it's no problem at all, and other times they say that they will only ship it. Most of the time I rather meet up and get the item right away rather than wait for it to be shipped to me, so it's not always about saving money. I am even willing to pay them the shipping price just for them allowing me to pick up the item personally. On the other hand if the shipping price is way over what it should be, I rather try and save the money if the person would let me pick the item up.
I've been lucky a few times with people who only lived a few towns away from me that let me let me pick up the items at their home or workplace. One time I found a user who only lived a few blocks away, but unfortunately they said no, so I passed up bidding on their item. |

I've picked up an item in person once....I drove an hour and a half. Kinda silly really but I like driving so I guess it worked out.

A lot of sellers & buyers prefer to do this when buying something locally. You should ask before bidding or at least winning the auction (although I have had sellers agree to do it after I had won the auction...depends on the seller). Yeah, they might end up losing a little money without shipping charges, but honestly it's a lot easier to pick something up as a buyer and a lot easier to have somebody pick it up instead of dealing with shipping an item as a seller. And it's always a very good idea to try meeting somewhere that's very public like a retail store or at a strip mall parking lot or even a gas station or supermarket. Avoid meeting at one's workplace or residence (it's always better to be safe than sorry).

I had the opposite happen. I won a guitar from a seller a mere 50 miles from me. I emailed him to ask if I could just pick it up and he flat out refused.

It is up to the discretion of the seller but it never hurts to at least ask.

I did this once when buying something, but asked before bidding. The seller agreed and we meet at a mutually convenient burger joint, so there was no need to worry about stalker aftershocks.

I just picked up a terror drome I won off of ebay this past weekend. If I would have payed for the shipping it would have been upward of 60 bucks. Guy was more than willing to have me pick the item up, less work for him to pack and ship the item!
