So I've been looking at these Sideshow figures and I bought the exclusive Duke figure. I've really never looked at super-detailed 1:6 figures before. And so, as a result of getting interested in Sideshow Joe figures, I've started looking at other deluxe 1:6 figures.
... and I've come to a conclusion: Sideshow is ripping us off. Other companies like Hot Toys, Very Hot, Toy City, Playhouse, etc. all make super detailed figures, and I personally think they're much more impressive. The accesories are much more realistic, and the face sculpts are pretty awesome. Based on what I've seen, I could almost kit-bash a Flint together that would be far more "plausible" and with better accesories (Plastic beret? Really? And why can't we get the proper beret colors for Flint and Beach-Head?) The other thing is PRICE. These other companies are offering much more impressive accesories, and their prices are lower. I'm sure licencing comes into play, but Sideshow still seems priced too high. I'm just saying that Sideshow may have gotten me interested in 1:6 figures, but now that I've been looking around, I think they're WAY too pricey for what they're offering. Plus, what's up with the face sculpts with Flint and Beach-Head? What do y'all think? I was recently on the Sideshow forum, but I found those guys to not be very knowledgeable about Joes. They're all guys who collected when they were young, and then quit in '85 or '86. So they really don't have a lot of knowledge of what's happened with Joe in the past 25 years. And if it's one thing I don't care for, it's talking about a subject I care about with people who have no idea what they're talking about. I mean, honestly, if they were really Joe fans, they would be members over here.

Theyre way to expensive although SE was completely badass. I dont dislike them, I think theyre pretty dope, but too expensive for my blood and theyre to much like dolls to me. I like the 3 1/4 way better.

i do like them - the maskless figures i agree with you 100%. hot toys has the best face/head sculpts - they are so detailed you can see the pores of their skin and their eyes are awesome to. the platoon figure of charlie sheen coming out looks fantastic.
there are so many better options out there for military 1.6th scale thats for sure, but i just cant get my joes any where else i think as of now until they get better face sculpts and better final product i will only be picking up the masked characters. the prototypes look amazing but when i got my duke his head looked like a ken doll and it just looked really poor. all of their other figures i love so far - i want to get into some other lines like predator(s) so im going to be very picky choosey about what i pick up next. I have all the joes so far and there are a few that i will be putting up on ebay

Mid-way through the Star Wars collection I decided I was paying for the Sideshow brand name and not the product. At least I have more room for 3 3/4 toys now

Flint and Beachhead do have the proper beret colors...for Flint and Beachhead. Flint wears a black beret, always has. Beachhead has often/always had a red beret tucked into his vest. Are they correct US military colors? No, but G.I. Joe isn't a real G.I. Joe military unit, either.
I just feel like if plausible modern military is what you're after, maybe Sideshow Joes aren't the way to go. Personally I have Duke, Snake-Eyes, and SS. Snake-Eyes I have some quibbles with (body is too small and slight) but other than that I really enjoy them, and intend to get Flint and Beachhead (Firefly I'm still waffling on). I DO agree, ultimately, that they are probably a little over priced. But with Joes I'm in it for the character more than technical accuracy, I guess, and I feel these adequately convey that for me.

I DO agree, ultimately, that they are probably a little over priced. But with Joes I'm in it for the character more than technical accuracy, I guess, and I feel these adequately convey that for me. Certainly the original Flint figure had a black beret, but Hasbro has released a lot of Flint figures over the years and many of them have had Green Berets, Tan/Khaki berets, Black Berets, and no berets at all. It seems to me that we've been told by Hasbro on multiple occasions that Hasbro often make color/paint choices based on what was economical... I expect Flint's original beret color was such a choice. My basic argument with Flint's beret on the Sideshow figure is two-fold: Material and Color. Regardless of the color, I think a good fabric beret would be preferable to a plastic one. If they've worked so hard for all of his other accessories to be realistic, a cloth beret would be better. However, it's an easy kit-bash swap. Concerning color, it seems to me that Sideshow has consistently tried to emphasize that their figures are supposed to be realistic, modern interpretations of the classic characters. Changing Flint's beret color to green - the proper color for a Special Forces Operator - is not much different that giving Duke Knee pads, or changing his bandoleer to a bag, etc. It's like how they gave Flint a tactical shotgun... it's a modern, realistic change in keeping with Sideshow's stated goals. And surely Flint's shotgun is just as iconic as his beret. As for Beach-Head, as much as I would prefer him to have a tan/khaki or green beret, I would have settled for Maroon... and Maroon is the ORIGINAL color the figure had in '86. Maroon is the color of the Army Airborne, and would be plausible for Beach-Head as an Airborne Ranger. Red makes no sense at all. The Army does not wear red; they have never worn red. The original figure's beret was Maroon; so is the 25th figure. And again, a good fabric beret would be preferable. Regardless. These are easy fixes for me. I'll just swap their issued headgear with some good ones I've found on Ebay. But I do understand what you're saying, and I know a lot of fans prefer Flint's original beret color. And, I mean no offense by my opinions. Honestly, thanks for taking the time to post on this thread... this discussion is much more civil than similar discussions I've seen on the Sideshow forum. The main issue that isn't so easy to fix is the head sculpts themselves... Beach-head's head is particularly weird looking.

Given they are they are the only ones giving us super detailed and badass Joes with full authority on the licenes how can anyone complain? No one is in competition with them. Hot Toys does make a good line as well and I have thier predator ducth and billy figures but really when you own both and they stand side by side you can not tell the differenc eunless your lookin gat them with a magnifying glass... lol
I agree with you on some of the the heads like Duke, Beachehad and Flint though those are horendous, why i am buying only the masked figures and mostly Cobras, masked beachhead is the first joe I bought. Skipped over Storm Shadow as I did not like his cobra sigil and his dinky looking uniform They are not ripping anyone off though since it is 100% sanctioned by Hasbro for the brand and that adds cost, go ahead and buy those generic soldiers from the other lines and kit bash em, by the time you buy all the parts and shipping, you'll be right back to where you started with the side show price |

I own every SideShow GI JOE 1/6th release and have a pre-order for the exclusive of everyone that is in the pipeline. They are that good. They are the best 12" incarnations of RAH to be released...EVER. Matter of fact, I would argue that they are the best figures ever released representing the RAH mythos and storyline.
The competitors to sideshow have less restriction as to what they can and cannot make. We want something true to RAH, and that is what they are giving us. If you want real military, go buy something else. The SideShow Joes look amazing in my display case. My ONLY complaint is that they do not release them more frequently. They currently release 4-6 a year. I visit sideshowcollectibles.com fairly often. Then have forums for the sideshow lines and I check the posts in the Military/GI Joe section, but not nearly as often as I come to the tank. They are a slightly different breed of collector, as many are a Sideshow collector or a statue collector...etc. Me, I just like the RAH joes. |
