Forgive me if there is a existing Sideshow Discussion Thread (looked for a good 10 pages).
So with the modern line almost at 85% completion and no news of a 6 In ARAH line, I am debating taking my Joe collection to the next level with the SideShow line. I have a couple Hot Toys but I have never seen a Sideshow in hand. So, any feedback from my fellow joe community on these? From favorites, suggestions, or warnings, ect? Thanks |

I have the Storm Shadow statue, it was my second Sideshow after the Darth Sidious Legendary Scale Bust. I love it, and would kill to have a Firefly and Zartan in the same size, same material (I don't like the "soft goods" statues or Premium Format Figures).

Be prepared to spend, some of those figures are pretty expensive on the secondary market. The statues are just too far out of my price range, but they look fantastic.

This post is probably coming way too late to be of any help, but since I am still actively collecting Sideshow Gijoe I thought it might be of interest to others starting out with a collection.
1. It can be addictive. I was initially just going to buy the first Snake Eyes,,,and of course, Storm Shadow. But that Beachhead is kind of cool, and look at the ninja figures. You get my drift. I now have all but 3 of the entire line. 2. You will notice that the later issued figures don't have nearly as many accessories as the early ones. I assume to save money for the company, though it doesn't appear these savings are passed on to the consumer based on the prices. 3. They can be pricey, especially on the secondary market. Since I display my figures I have been buying preowned but complete figures on eBay that are generally less expensive than those being sold as brand new. Anyway, I hope there are still others out there, like me, suffering from Sideshow Gijoe addiction and trying to unconvingly explain to their wives that the number of figures only appears to be continually increasing. |

I was really into them and had an entire display set of shelves for them. I have slowly been selling them off and only have a few of the most recent left. My buyers seemed to have been stores. I did not mark up beyond what I paid but many would try to buy really low or ask me to part them out.

I got into Sideshow's GI Joes several years ago (around 1-2 years of the tail-end of the run) while they were releasing new ones and while I'm sad they discontinued the line, a part of me (my wallet) is happy that they actually did stop because it was getting too addictive.
I gave myself parameters to help curb my appetite on these like only getting Cobra charactders (I felt the GI Joe characters looked a bit too generic army men) and also, tried to only get Sideshow exclusive versions where ever I could because sometimes the bonuses pieces were essential to my liking the look of the figure (like Destro's old Iron Mask and Baroness's alternate portrait) and others were just great to have at no additional cost (like Cobra Commander's gun). Started out with Storm Shadow V2 hooded version with SS exclusive sword.... Then... Major Bludd with SS exclusive alternate portrait... Cobra Commander (blue helmeted version) with SS excl. pistol Destro with SS excl. alternate Iron Mask portrait Baroness with SS exclusive alternate portrait Crimson Guard with SS exclusive alternate portrait Zartan with SS excl. "Evil Duke" alternate portrait In addition to getting these figures, after getting Cobra Commander, I even hunted down the already sold-out Cobra Throne, which I miraculously found at a local hobby toy store for a little over retail price! I was so happy to have found it in pristine condition at that price as they are only limited 750 worldwide and I wasn't going to pay $700+ for it and I had almost come to terms with the idea of never owning the Throne. I didn't get any of the earlier figures prior to the above in the aftermarket as looking at photos online of the Cobra Troopers, etc. the clothing just didn't seemed to fit right on the figures and they really seemed like cheaper "dolls" to me. The ones I got, Sideshow somehow got the clothing right. There were a couple of QC issues like Destro's pistol holster magnet came in the box detached or Major Bludd having two of the same hands and Sideshow was really great about replacing those things so please be sure to know exactly what you're buying in the aftermarket. A seller claiming an "unopened" box isn't necessarily a good thing as there may be issues/flaws/QC issues like the above that they aren't aware of so I think its best to have the specimen already opened and inspected, unless you're okay with taking the risk. Otherwise, the quality of these releases are outstanding. The reason why I got so addicted to them is because the level of detail and craftmanship that went into the weapons and accessories. Truly amazing stuff and if you get into them, be forewarned that it is a slippery slope! Good luck in your hunt! |
