Hello!
I'm a new forum user here and actually registered an account just for this problem I'm having with the Sideshow Cobra Sniper figure. I've been collecting 12 inch figures for few years now, mainly Hot Toys and Sideshow G.I. Joe figures. I've been visiting this forum on an occasion, but like I said this is first time posting on it. This problem I'm going to describe to you just in a moment is a totally new one to me. Actually I had never even thought that anything like this could happen to me as a collector, so this is definitely a situation I have no previous experience or any ideas on about. So as fellow collectors please tell me if you have encountered anything like this before? I won this Sideshow Cobra Sniper in an Ebay auction about a week ago: Cobra Sniper Sixth Scale Figure - Sideshow Collectibles - SideshowCollectibles.com It arrived and I just noticed that there is something on the different hands, water canteens, head and knee pads. It's like big dust particles, that's what it looks like, but this figure is supposed to be sealed in it's packaging, never opened before? It also seems like it has never been opened [at least the flaps seem to be pristine in condition], but there is this thick dust like substance on the parts still!? There is also a smell that's coming out of the box, so I was thinking that could this be mold/mildew!? I haven't really paid any attention before on how these figures are supposed to smell? I mean there is probably some kind mix of rubber, plastic and the stuff they use on the clothing -smell on these figures but as I always keep them sealed in their packaging [yes, I'm one of those collectors], I haven't really noticed anything about any smell before. Then again I haven't really thought about it, so this could be why I have missed on it before? I've never have this happened to me before, so I have no clear idea about this? Have you ever encountered something like this, this thick white dust like stuff? I asked about the seller if this figure has been kept in a moist place, that it could indeed be mold/mildew? The seller hasn't yet answered anything, so I hope you can tell me something about this as I'm kinda at lost at what is this stuff on the figure's different parts and accessories? The packaging of the figure was other wise in good condition - it didn't have the brown shipper or the plastic bag on it, but the packaging shows no signs of bad storing. And if this is indeed mold/mildew, how can it get inside the packaging if it's sealed? I mean how does moisture or air get there, creating the possibility of mold/mildew to live in there? This thing makes no sense to me, so please advise me on it as I'm no mold/mildew expert. Any ideas or stories is advised, because this thing is freaking me out a little... I have seven other Sideshow G.I. Joe figures so if this is mold/mildew, can this happen to my other figures as well!? I've checked them all after purchasing them and they have been fine. Now they're being stored in their original packaging with the plastic bags on them in a sealed plastic container. Is this ideal way to store your 12 inch figures? I usually prefer to have them sealed like this, even to have them in the original brown shipper box, if I just got that when I bought the figure. I always thought that this is the one sure way that your figures are going to stay mint and retain their value? Am I wrong? Is it inevitable that something like this will happen anyways, no matter how well you store them? Please tell me, this thing is really messing up with my mind... |

I'm no expert, but it's possible that the previous owner didn't take care of his figure well. Humidity, daily temperature can affect a figure I think. Does the box completely sealed with plastic wrap as well? I never own a Sideshow GI Joe, but if it's not plastic wrapped, then it's not air tight.
BNIB collectors have to keep humidity, temperature, etc where he/she kept the collection. Else things like this still can happen. Best to try and clean those dust/molds I guess.

Wow I have never come across this issue before. With that said I do not collect Sideshow figures and the only 12 inch figures that I have boxed are Gung Ho and Snake eyes from the Hall of fame line. If I had to guess with this being an isolated issue I would say that the problem isn't with your storage but prior to you getting it, like perhaps it was stored in a warehouse that was somehow damp or a basement or something. I think the only remedy would be to open and clean it. If you can't bring yourself to do it then I would list it as is and pick up another one. Just be sure to be upfront about the issue so you don't get it returned and have to eat the shipping costs. I would stick some silicon packets with it to keep any further moisture out just in case.

I don't collect sideshow stuff, mainly due to the cost. But is it possible that it is some sort of flock put on the figure by sideshow for effect. It would make sense for a sniper and have seen other companies do that sort of thing and include a scent, usually some sort of outdoor scent.
I could be wrong.. but as I don't own one of these to compare, I can't give you a full comparison. I hope I am right about that though, so you wont have to go through getting another or trying to clean that one.

I would check over on the Sideshow forums too.
Although a lot of their GIJOE collectors are here on Hisstank also. http://www.sideshowcollectors.com/forums/forum.php

It would not explain the smell, but often, with 12" figures, people (including myself) will use baby powder or corn starch (sounds crazy, but corn starch works well with the seamless bodies) to make clothes slide on more smoothly. Could it be that?

I have had this stuff happen with 12 inch figures before, there is no rhyme or reason to which ones it happens with and I have always kept mine in the house with me so its not a basement or un climate controlled warehouse thing. But its usually the boots that do it, some other rubber parts. Some times it will wash off and sometimes it doesn't. I have never had it happen with ANY toy from the half dozen or so 3-4 inch figure lines I collect but I have had it happen with classic style Joes, Hall of Fame Joes, dragon, 21st century 12 inch figures. Unfortunately I do not have any sideshow... which is a shame because the gallery you linked to for this figure is one of the nicest toys I have ever seen and I would LOVE a few of that guy. Real sorry it happened to it. Honestly I just play with the ones it happened to any way, I clean them back off as best I can, sort of limit letting the kids play with them when they are in the putting things in their mouth ages, threw away some boots in particular that wouldn't seem to wash off from this stuff.

I owned every GI Joe figure sideshow made and non of them had this. Is it dirt or mold? I can't tell, but I would return it to sender for sure. It looks like it's all over the plastic too. At one time I had over 100 sideshow 12" figures and never once saw this. Not on Star Wars, Iron man or Joe. I wouldn't keep it.

It's hard to tell from the pictures but I would guess it is the plastic breaking down. I have a similar problem with my Sideshow Stalker head sculpt.

Thanks to everybody for answering me, I really appreciate it!
The figure came without the brown shipper or the plastic bag around it, so I have no idea how long it has been without those? The seller on Ebay hasn't answered me, so I really don't know. They're a French figure store called SF Collector [on Ebay they use at least the name "herofanstore"] so please be aware of them if you think about buying figures - they sell at least Hot Toys and Sideshow 12 inch figures, so with the money you have to put in to those it's not really worth taking the risk! I just confirmed this from another French figure seller I know - he said that SF Collector has a very bad reputation in France, but unfortunately I didn't know this at the time I was bidding for this figure..... :( I've now seen pictures of this figure and this is not weathering or other kind of effects by Sideshow. The gun and knife are still sealed under tape in the packaging on mine, so it's unlikely that this has been opened and customized by someone? It was listed as sealed anyways, so it should be new - then again if the reputation of SF Collector is so bad, I have no idea if it's true anyways? It seemed sealed but then again these Sideshow G.I. Joe figures have no sealing tapes, so it's hard to tell if the flaps have been opened or not? Quote:

I'd return this but the seller isn't replying anything to me - I've tried few times now. So I guess I'll just have to file a claim on Ebay and try to get refunded as much as possible? I've uploaded the pictures there also, so I guess that should turn the situation to my favour, I guess? |
