Ok, so I'm rolling right along into Classics Vol 5 and got to 45.
Not that I didn't like the previous issues...but this is just "it"! Cobra Island really comming into it's own...Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow finally figuring out who really killed the Hardmaster. The "standoff" between Zartan and Ripcord is just awesome...that is the kind of stuff you acted out with your O-rings back in the day..just great, fun writing. The writing there is just what you would hope to find reading a classic comic...you can tell there was passion with these characters. Now that I know Ripcord was so badass it just makes me dislike ROC Ripcord even more! (Sorry..couldn't pass up an opportunity!) Anyone else completely in love with this area of Joe in comics?? Can't wait for 46...(most awesome cover ever!) |

The introduction of COBRA Island and successive issues were some of the best in the whole run.

That was a great storyline...making me wanna bust out the box and read em all again...THATS how Ripcord shoulda been...THATS how SE and SSs history and origins shoulda been in live action and/or resolute form...oh well.

it's good stuff and you still have a while to go before it gets bad. so enjoy these issues. once you get to around #119, it flips and gets horrid.

45 was good but My favorite story arc still to this day is the one starting at issue 136. I think this entire arc of the Marvel series was underrated. Plus, Andrew Wildman's artwork was incredible.

Oh, just wait til the Cobra Island Civil War!
And Special Missions came out around the same time as the regular series was at its peak, and was really icing on the cake. Really good icing - like arguably better than the cake itself. |

Funny thing is I got into it in the late 100-teens...basically my favorite stuff was always where I picked up the 1st time, I believe that was Trucial Abysmia and Ninja Force.....which actually resparked my love of Joe....so if thats what I'm in for, I'm really looking fwd to it! |

Well said. I don't wanna beat a dead...and rotting horse here, but now that I'm into these issues..ROC REALLY makes me scratch my head...and that clip of L.H. saying he enjoyed what he saw...L.H. is my man..THEE man...but that's gotta be horseshit. There is NO WAY you went from an arc like this, where characters are developed and given strong backgrounds...and the admiration for the creation comes out stronger and stronger...to a film like ROC and say "yeah this is cool interperation of some of the greatest work in comic book history".....Not buying that.

i agree with Pit Viper...Hama said (around ROC) that he "wrote by the seat of his pants", yet late in the run,-SPOILER- when he reveals FireFly as being the "faceless master", he wrote in the letter column that he was withholding that secret since the beginning...I think Hama, like Stan Lee, is just SO happy that his work is being recognized, that ANY interpretation is a good interpretation....

A part of me thinks that's true..he's just glad it made big screen status, a part of me thinks HE must think...wtf is going on here?
Anyway on another note, cover wise...issue 46 and 47 are by far 2 of the coolest damn comic book covers ever! |
