What killed comics? I've often wondered the exact same thing and I fully believe that technology and the sheer lack of time due to video games (which i also believe killed the toy industry for kids for the most part). I've seen comic shops come and go in a matter of weeks, they're just headed the same way as newsprint. It really does suck but its a sign of the times.
Well that and Disney buying Marvel.......................

secret wars was the last great achievement in super hero comics. in the 90's for ME, it was
a) i did not like the art trends (lee, mcfarland, etc.) b) the storytelling got lost. splash pages took over and people forgot how to pace comics properly, to tell a story. so i quit mainstream comics, but fortunately found some indie stuff that has kept me entertained since then. marshall law mr. monster chris ware's acme novelty library the occasional geoff darrow honestly, black and white jack kirby collections (new gods, ff, thor, etc.) will keep me happily reading for a long time. |

Right now the move to $3.99 for 32 page books by Marvel and DC sucks. Now the special 40 page books are going to be $4.99 or more. I bought comics every week from October 1986 up until about May 2010. I haven't bought any Marvel since the Heroic Age began and DC since Brightest Day began.
Probably won't buy much from now on except trades which I've never really done before. Buying Trade Paperbacks may be the way to go. I'm going to wait for the new ARAH trades instead of buying monthly at $3.99. |

It was a metric ton of stuff coulminated into a crap fest.
Gimmicks, how many gold foil die-cast, cut covers could people stand, apparently comics found out. The expansion was too fast and everyone lost sight of what everyone was in the bisness for. Valiant, Image, Malibu et al. While each had some great stuff, they also had tons of turds (Malibu was a huge one, maybe 2 good comics and 50 horrid ones). But that lack of sight lead to the downfall. Really look at the series that started up during that stretch and then look at how they ended. Example" Ghost Rider: a powerful spirit of vengance driven to seek out wrong doers. His end, some messed up marrage crap that I keep blocking out it was so bad. Solar the man of atom: Man in an industral accedent which gains super powers (Very similar to Dr. Manhatten, to which Manhattan was actually based on the original Solar partly as well as Captian atom, but I digress). He struggles to retain his humanity in the light of these strange powers. His end of his series, a split personality in which his "Destroyer side" is off committing genocide and his "normal side" which no one can really comprehend (Note at this point the writers and editors were makeing him like Dr. Manhattan ie god like, which ran against his character, ect). Darkhawk-Teenage kid who finds a mysterious suit of armor he can call upon with his amulet, his end, who cares. And on, and on and on. Basicly story (as well as art) went downhill and I mean downhill. Also there was killing off the big heroes for "sales" Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, Green Arrow, and Spidey's clone saga crap all occured in this time frame. |

Well I've always wondered this.
What Really killed Comics back in the 90's? I mean there were comic shops all over the place, then suddenly it all crashed and shops closed up resulting in a crap ton of comics on the market. -Hell I just bought about 300 or so Comics on ebay for $60 total that were bought from a store that had closed down. I mean back in those days you could find comics at your local grocery store, the new stand, now it's rather hard to find the regular places where you can get em unless you have a specialty shop around you. also they are on facebook and will answer questions very cool , reminds me of the old days of Marvel Still was it overspeculation? That back in those days people grabbed up the #1 issues thinking they'd be worth untold hundreds in 10 or so years? but whats killing them now is they suck and the companies expect you to pay $4.00 bucks an issue,NO THANKS Bad writing Bad art Who cares. check out Redheadcomics.com good writing good art and its free!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I'm waiting for Marvel or DC to claim failing sales are the result of ongoing piracy. Like the MPA or RIAA.

Comics will probably be 100% online distribution one day anyway like how itunes destroyed Tower Records; Marvel and DC must make most of their money off of licensing now anyway.

Another interesting standpoint is the change in materials and distribution. I love the old comics on news pulp, but honestly the quality of the image and the durability of the paper were really low compared to what standards we have today. I don't know of any printers that can print on that old comic paper anymore and why would they when it's an inferior product for durability, longevity, quality, control...etc... but ya know what? That lower quality paper also is why it's so hard to find many older issues complete let alone NM. I'm wondering how much the change in paper, inks, technology have contributed to costs. Anyone know?
BTW some valiant titles are being rebooted. Those were good comics but they grew too quickly. |

IMHO a lot of new, casual readers find that titles are too inaccessable if a reader isn't starting from ish. 1, add that to the exorbitant price of books lately (which seems to drive away older fans as well). The negative stigma that popular media places on comic readers doesn't help either.
I just read through the first of the Darkest Night collection (there were like 6 different hardbacks at B&N, I struggled to find the main story). I got the jist of the main story thread but I was confused most of the time due all the back stories of anncillary characters I don't really care about. I won't be buying the rest of the collections (after reading what I did, I regret spending the $), & the only way I'll finish the story is if I can find someone who'll let me borrow their copies. |
