The only real negative about the whole series was that Hasbro kept forcing Larry to write in characters and vehicles that he really had no use for. But even with this limitation, he was able to do some really amazing things in a "kids" comic book. The idea of the Oktober guard working together with the Joe team was brilliant - even at the height of the cold war. The death of Gen. Flagg and Kwinn and Dr. Venom after developing them over many issues was daring. Later, the deaths of many Joes was just as daring (even as many had become redundant with the additions over the years.)

As a kid, I loved the Borovia rescue in 61-65. I still hope Hasbro will do a 5-pack with the 4 joes in black and Spiegue (sp).
Now I'm a big fan of the later arks. The Millville story with Mutt and Spirit leading a resistance, The Benhezeen War and the Cobra invasion of Borovia with the Joes acting as advisors. |

I just read issue 74, got it in one of the old comic packs....
I don't know if Serpentor was feeling horny or what the reason was for him tying up the baroness and strapping her to the front of his hiss tank making her look like she was doing some bondage fetish or something.....that or he was using her as a human shield I guess..... Still....that's just crazy to me... |

Malice and terror, that's all. Something he got from one of the people in his head, probably was a fairly common tactic back in the old days.

I've been buying the Classic G.I. Joe Trade Paperback's by IDW from Amazon.com. They are up to volume 6 right now, I'm hoping IDW keeps the license to G.I. Joe long enough to collect all 155 issues.
I think my favorite story arc was The Snake Eyes Trilogy issues 94-96. But I loved the stories all the way through 115. The scene where S.A.W. Viper kills all those Joes in the ditch is also on the top of my favorite list in the series. |

I started on issue 24 i think, thats when the stories were printed into the Action Force weekly comic over here in the UK, it was only 5 pages of an issue each week, one of my favorite issues was #31(which was a season special in the UK). I loved that story arc, where Destro, Firefly and Fred I attack SE at his hut. I used to play with my figs acting out that story, i even made a cardboard hut and riddled it with holes for the bullet holes.
Always loved the Cobra Island Civil War arc as well, thats when Marvel UK stopped printing Gi Joe over here, so i never got to see the conclusion until several years later. When i finally managed to buy all 155 issues in the 90s, i always liked reading issue #11, it is a great story and Hama managed to fit alot of Joes in that issue. Special Missions and the Yearbooks are pretty cool too, some of them SM issues have some great stories, especially issue #4 Skirmish issue #8 Ambush, issue #23 Scoop and issue #26 Passing of the Guard. I'm probably due a re-reading of all the issues some time soon as it goes.

Larry Hama is a great writer and all, but I've noticed he keeps on using a couple of key phrases. "He's armed for bear!"I guess this means armed to take down a bear.
"...... but good!" Something or other about "bracketing" a target. Something or other about most of the enemies' guns facing outward or forwards instead of inside or backwards. There are a couple of other phrases that constantly show up but I can't think of them now. |
