I am re-reading them now, and absolutely hate Ninja Force (is anybody NOT a ninja?), DEF, Eco-Squad, and Star Brigade. They are all completely assinine, and their stories are ridiculous as is the TF tie in. Take those out, and the comics are quite good still today.

My favorite issues were issue #11 through about #25 after that I kind of lost interest. Remember the cartoons that would air promoting the comic? I can't think of ANY other comic that got that treatment.

I just finished the run (it seems that all I have done at work for the past week is read them online ;)).
What I liked: Cobra wasn't completely incompetant- some of their schemes were genius. They showed life after GI Joe for some characters - Grunt, Destro, Baronness. Showed that the military life is full of "cluster foul-ups" The stories for the most part were very engrossing, and weren't afraid of injuring or killing characters, as well as maybe showing good guys doing questionable things, and the bad guys doing the honorable thing. Didn't like: Over use of the ninjas. Good grief, if had read "Arashikage Mindset" one more time, I would have gone postal. Everybody was a frakkin' ninja at the end. Stupid sub-teams getting space in the books. Hate, hate, hate anything remotely drug-eco-ninja-star related now. The mileage the brainwave scanner got. I don't know who came up with the idea, but they got their money's worth right there. They ruined Destro, Zartan, Billy, the Baronness and Storm Shadow as characters with this doohickey. Next up, the IDW and DDP versions....

I agree with the brainscanner; they got their mileage out of that thing.
I absolutely LOVED the plan/formation of Cobra Island. How Cobra in the background had it all planned out to be a government and them making it all legal and a recognized government/country. |

well all that stuff was going on in those issues too...but that story arc sort of really began and just never stopped during 136/137 when scarlett and dr. Biggles-jones became double agents. and not being a fan of transformers they really blended it well and threw in some off the wall one shots with cobra's dark island. they kept things classic while still getting in all the new stuff. the whole series felt ongoing and the artwork for the most part was fabulous. mostly thanks to Andrew Wildman. the artist right around 146-150 was good tho too.
and I agree on the brain scanner thing too...but I do think that was somewhat the basis for what they used in ROC with the nanomites. |

Actually, weren't the first Image comics all about Nanomites?
My favorite saga in the Joe comics is a toss up between the rise of Cobra Island, and the Cobra Civil War where the Joes were forced to fight for Serpentor against Cobra Commander and later, Destro and his Iron Grenadiers.

Can I just ask HOW you were able to read these all online??? I'm slowly in the process of buying up the TPBs being released by IDW, but didn't know there was anyway to advance in the story by reading these online. Are you simply talking about reading the synopses provided at yojoe.com or other sites?
