The latest reliable figures (September 2009) based on actual sales from ICv2 are the following:
- CLASSIC GI JOE TP VOL 05: 1,664 copies sold (no. 58 on the list of top-selling trade paperbacks/graphic novels) - GI JOE ORIGINS TP VOL 01: 1,388 copies sold (no. 78 on the list of top-selling trade paperbacks/graphic novels) - GI JOE #9: 17,436 copies sold (no. 138 on the list of top-selling individual comics issues) - GI JOE ORIGINS #7: 14,753 copies sold (no. 154 on the list of top-selling individual comics issues) - GI JOE COBRA SPECIAL #1: 14,244 (no. 158 on the list of top-selling individual comics issues) The numbers are pretty good for the trade paperbacks, especially for a non-Marvel/DC publisher (I'm very surprised that Classic GI Joe Vol.5 outsold the Thor trade paperback by Dan Jurgens and John Romita, Jr. and Superman/Batman: Public Enemies vol.1). The sales numbers for the single issues are healthy (these days, anything above 5000 issues sold per month is considered a relative success) but they could definitely be better. Ultimately, I think the single issues will become loss-leaders for the trade paperbacks (if they aren't already), which is really where the money is in comics publishing these days (not that there's a lot of money to be made in non-Marvel comics publishing but you know what I mean). |

Those are roughly the same numbers (15,000)the ddp joes (americas elite) had at the end of the run I think the start of image ddp had around 90,000.

Well, non-Marvel comics sales across the board (not just as it pertains to GI Joe-themed comcis) have pretty much nose-dived since 2001. A better metric for gauging how the current comics are doing is by comparing them to today's best-selling titles (of which only the top 5 sold more than 90 000 copies in September), and using that method, IDW's sales are pretty healthy in relative terms (only three other non-Marvel/DC titles sold more single-issue copies than GI Joe #9: Archie #601, Walking Dead #65, and Angel #25). It's just that individual comic book issues, regardless of title, just don't sell as much as they used to (on a positive note, TPB sales are pretty much making up for the loss of interest in single issue "pamphlets").

BTW, Walking Dead is considered a HUGE HIT book.
Comics, today, are pretty much made for the trade paperback.

Part of the problem is that comics are like $3-5 each.

Over on the Beat they do a monthly comparison of sales:
THE BEAT Blog Archive Indie Month-to-Month Sales: August 2009 Check out GiJoe's Monthly and yearly comparisons: 116 GI Joe (IDW) 08/2004: GI Joe #33 (Devil’s Due) - 28,004 08/2005: GI Joe: America’s Elite #2 (Devil’s Due) - 22,130 08/2006: GI Joe: America’s Elite #14 (Devil’s Due) - 17,315 08/2007: GI Joe: America’s Elite #26 (Devils Due) - 15,354 08/2008: - ===== 01/2009: GI Joe #1 - 32,840 02/2009: GI Joe #2 - 23,641 (-28.0%) 03/2009: GI Joe #3 - 22,902 (-31.2%) 04/2009: GI Joe #4 - 22,735 (-0.7%) 05/2009: GI Joe #5 - 21,968 (-3.4%) 06/2009: GI Joe #6 - 20,809 (-5.3%) 07/2009: GI Joe #7 - 20,319 (-2.4%) 08/2009: GI Joe #8 - 18,750 (-7.7%) 6 month (-20.7%) 1 year (n.a.) 2 year (+22.1%) 3 year (+8.9%) 4 year (-15.3%) 5 year (-33.0%) As you can see they are doing better than when they were at DD last year but about what they were 2 years ago. While some might worry about the drop between the past few issues it could also mean most people are switched to trades for future story lines. |

Need to run the number comparasion thru the filter of the industry as a whole as well. The industry as a whole is down from numbers from the DDP days. So stands to reason that Joe would be down as well.

i am not surprised vol 5 of the classic did so well. it was the last of the marvel TPBs that came out and was harder to find.
i bet vol 6 does even better since it has stuff not released by marvel in TPB form. i know for one that i switched to TPB only years ago and couldnt be more happier. i think of all the time i wasted bagging and boarding comcs. i had all my old DDP comics bound into 3 volumes. i bought the AE in trade. |
