True, but I mean franchise characters. Come on how many radiation based hero's do you need (Fantastic 4, Hulk, Spiderman)? I just think Supes, Batman, GL and WW are better characters with superior backstories.

the dc guys are so powerful: superman, marvel, green lantern, wonder woman, flash, martian manhunter, that they can't lose.
if you can't lose, how interesting can you be? i like the dc guys from a power/look/iconic standpoint, but the dc guys provide more opportunity for depth, as they can, and sometimes do, falter. but its still a batworld and were all just living in it. plus dc is so top heavy, after the jl, it gets real thin real quick. calling spiderman lame just seems...not so much un-american, un human'ish. I dug spiderman, before i could even read, i didn't have any idea of what his backstory was, when i was four, i just a pile of comics, DC and marvel, and they all formed a panthenon in my head.

I'm a fan of both (if that's allowed ) but since I had to pick one I chose Marvel

I guess for the most part it probably comes down to what you read first as a child. For me it was Marvel. I remember me and my older brother getting the Marvel ROTJ comic, GI Joe, Secret Wars and Transformer comics back in the early 80's. Then when I was about 10 my friend who collected Alpha Team, Excalibur, X-Men and X-Factor sparked my interest in comics. I mostly followed Spider-Man and X-Men during the late 80's through the early 90's. I tried reading some DC every once in awhile but I think It was too involved with my Marvel books, so I always lost interest.
I was a huge Image fan when they started in 1992 and eventually stopped collecting comics all together by early '95.

I never cared for DC. I bought a lot of Marvel in the 80' to the late 90's then got out of comics until DD brought GI Joe back.

DC
Probably has something to do with growing up with Superfriends and Super Powers. Spiderman and his Amazing Friends was an awesome show, but those Secret Wars toys were bogus. I enjoy and read most of what DC puts out now. Marvel books I like; Captain America and Thor. Anyone give Dynamite a try? |

Five years ago I'd have said Marvel, but as I get older I find myself liking a lot of stuff DC does. While their major universe is mostly restrained and inconsistant (in art and story) their Vertigo line has had some of the most compelling and mature storytelling about. Marvel has tried to dabble in the mature readers market, but it never got the critical acclaim. DC completely won that battle with characters like Morpheus (and his dysfunctional family), Jesse Custer (and his infinitely more dysfunctional family), and Constantine (and his dysfunctional whole life), and writers like Neil Gaiman, Alan Moore, and Garth Ennis to bring them to life.
So yeah, superheros are fun, escapist entertainment, but DC has managed to cater to my ever-maturing tastes a lot better than the other guys. Go ahead, tell this guy to make yours Marvel. >.> |
