I was just flipping through old comics, looking for Mile High Comics ads to see what price Mile High was selling G. I. Joe, A Real American Hero back issues for in the mid-80s (I remember that the prices were relatively high, 'cause the book was really freakin' hot there for a while, but I don't recall specifics) - and the monthly Bullpen Bulletins in first comic I checked, a book from August of '82, has this interesting little G.I. Joe plug, so I thought I'd scan and share, for kicks.
Edit: My initial reaction to Shooter's claim that the G.I. Joe comic commercial "could be the single biggest event in comics history, marking the beginning of a new era of wider exposure for Marvel Comics and the Marvel Universe" is to smirk - but he's right. The comic, commercial and toys lead to the cartoon - which is an important part of the foundation of the Marvel Media Machine that exists today. Last edited by Jonathan; 06-04-2009 at 12:49 AM.. |

Thanks for sharing the scanned page. I can't believe it's been so long since the first issue came out. And yeah, the GI Joe license was one of the primary reasons Marvel eventually overtook the direct market by the mid-1980s. I think at one point GI Joe was outselling X-Men and Batman combined. And this was at a time when selling less than 20 000 issues a month was considered below-average (these days, only a handful of monthly titles break the 20 000 issue mark).
