I think the golden age was issues 11-19. Wow, did they hit a stride...the 2nd gen of characters and vehicles...the story line was graduate level (look at some of the words...I saw some of the same words when i took the graduate record exam!).
Issue 20 to me was retarded....it totally derailed the story line...then issue 21...come on..get back on it already (I'm sorry, I don't feel it was the greatest GI Joe story ever told....)....

Why don't I remember #155? I have it and I need to go back and read it. I just remember being let down. The Marvel run for all intents and purposes is the Old Testament of GIJoe. maybe DDP and Image being New Testament. (Sorry for the Religious analogy) It has it's ups and downs but as a kid I loved every issue. Now When I read some of it I'm a little less impressed. I wish I had read more of the Special Missions stuff since it was better story telling at the time of the decline in my eyes.
Like someone mentioned after about #120 it switches to Ninja Mode. Beginning of the end IMO. #135 it becomes SNAKE-EYES in gijoe with Ninja Force, and is totally centered around ninjas, with some sprinkling of Star Brigade, Eco Warriors, and DEF. Not to mention the red Ninja Scorpion Pose Cheerleader Pyramid. ?????? Marvel then totally jumps the Shark with Snake-Eyes in GIjoe with the Transformer!!! +a full days dose of Ninja Force in Issue #139. By 155 I could hardly stand it. I just remember being totally let down. Maybe because it was the end. I enjoyed most of the DDP and image stuff. Can't say everything was great but it kept true to the Marvel Story. Although they tried too hard to tie everything in, it was fun while it lasted. Now we have IDW. The Koran of the GIjoe tale. Somewhat the same but things have been changed. So far the Origins and the Cobra Storyline are the best ones. Now you know what you missed about Larry after all those years. There is just better character development and storytelling, but now no Star Brigade to sell, no ECO-Warriors. Ninjas won't go away, but we're back to square one so Not everyone is a ninja yet. |

I liked the original Marvel GI Joe comics. I read them all when I was a kid. I have the entire collection, Large over sized issue #1 Kaybee special, European missions and all. There stored away so I can give them to my kids.
I have not read any of the latter comics like Image or IDW. I hope they are doing a good job, at least. I Remember issue #2 with Quinn and the early issues with the scare face cobra officer. The issue of Billy being Cobra Commander's son was interesting. I think the issue with Cobra Commander being captured and he drinks using a straw through his chrome dome was really cool to see as a kid. Issue #21 the silent one has to be one of the best of the line. The issue of the attack on Cobra Island and the death of a bunch of Joe's has to be up there too. The ending of the series was sudden. The series had a long run for its time. I think the comics fallout was also based on the fallout of the toy line. They were starting to repaint the figures and cast them in a different plastic that made them look like if they were GI Joe copies. I don't think the movie will follow the original comic book line, since the movie seems to be focused on Destro and M.A.R.S and not Cobra Commander and ARBCO. Also did you see the way the Cobra Commander figure looks? It has to be the worst looking figure of the line (see my post rant on it). The Neo-vipers look more like Destro with a metal skull mask. The M.A.R.S. troopers look more like original cobra troopers and not Iron Grenadiers. I hope they did not screw that up. At least the Resolute cartoon movie was true to the GI Joe comic book line with the end of the cartoon depicting cobra HQ being in Springfield and the companies name was ARBCO. They killed off Major Bludd, Zartan, and Strom Shadow and the only Gi Joe lost was Bazooka? They should of killed more Joe's off like the comic did. ;) Last edited by Firefly007; 06-09-2009 at 03:44 PM.. |

OK take it back. I just went back and reread #155 and it was a classy ending to what had become a lame story line at the end. It was sudden as it didn't fit with anything leading up to it. But I at least felt a little more closure this time reading it.

The only slightly intriguing plotline in the final years, to me, was the Cobra invasion of eastern Europe. But they Hama didn't seem to do much with it, as a good portion was wasted on the supposed "comical" stuff with Wolfgang and Gen. Leiderkranz.

Yeah...and check out the COVER, where Quick Kick (who was dead) and Storm Shadow (who was recently brainwashed by Cobra) are depicted as part of the Joe team.

Sure, the annoying Transformers crossover filled the book from about issue 137-143, but they weren't a part of the Eastern Europe Cobra invasion (145-150). My point was that the Eastern Europe plot was filled with Wolfgang and Gen. Leiderkranz.
You're preaching to the choir regarding the Transformers, though. I HATE those issues and consider them some of the worst comics I own (right up there with my one issue of Neal Adams' "Skate Man").

Transformers didn't overlap that part of the travesty? I thought they were in a Eastern European Country. Where were they located when the TF were in the comics?? I need to go back and look. I just remember a fat bloated Night Creeper Leader.

But, the Transformers plot took everything state-side. Megatron flew Cobra to the Ark (Transformers' spaceship) in North America. Then, everyone went down to Millville (presumably Michigan or some pastiche for Detroit), where the Transformers plot mercifully ended in issue 142 with a goofy fight. Millville is also where Fat Bloated Night Creeper Leader made his appearance (issue 141). I suppose that the ONLY good thing about the Transformers issues is that they FINALLY ended the Millville subplot that had been running (and often forgotten) since issue 99 or so. Issues 143 and 144 were both flashbacks dealing with Snake-Eyes and Scarlett. Then, issue 145 suddenly opened up with Cobra rolling through Borovia and officially beginning their Eastern Europe land grab campaign. To tie matters up, the White Clown and Magda were even killed in 145. For overall storyline purposes, 145 is something of an underrated issue. It's not a good issue, mind you...just one with some worthy plot developments and a good return to the "joe-verse". When it seemed liked things had been in the "Ninja-verse" and "Transformer-verse" since issue 135. "Read More About It": http://www.option38.com/comics/gijoe/145.asp
