Special Missions number 2 is probably the greatest single comicbook ever written.
Read that. |

The Special Missons issues are fantastic. I never really liked the Lifeline one that everyone seems to reference but the ones where Flint leads a mission to assassinate based on the CIA guys intel is great as is the one where Outback escapes from Borovia. I havent read them all yet but those have been highlights.
On a personal note, the image of the Crimson Guardsman earlier in the thread reminded me of something. Did anyone else find it odd that they were supposed to be covert undercover agents but rolled into town with a big Cobra hood ornament? lol! |

A lot of good advice and honest critiques of the original Marvel series posted here.
Some things I would keep in mind though are: (1) comic book writing styles and what you can print in comics has matured so much since the '80s. So you might some of the stories a bit cheesy. There were definitely some one-shot, filler stories when Marvel was getting 'Joe off the ground. This was something I would point out to people when they complained that ROC or Retaliation wasn't "real" like the comic books. In the first 10 issues you're gonna find giant robots, nano-bugs, telescoping-cockpit vehicles, SEA legs (think Scout Walkers), and other VTOL-futuristic vehicles. For me, the story really developed by issue 11 and Hama was able to dive deeper into some of his own personal characters like Dr. Venom and Kwinn. (2) Keep in mind the comics, like the cartoon, were simply another vehicle to sell toys. This will explain why you have single issues dedicated to the MOBAT, Killer WHALE, Skystriker vs Rattler (issue 34 is amazing!), Roller Thunder, etc. Also, as action figures were no longer available on the toy aisles they also took a back seat in the comic book. (3) As others have mentioned somewhere around issue 100-ish the storyline just kind of drops. Plus, I don't care for the art in this period as much either. However, keep in mind - again - that the comics are a vehicle to sell toys, and at this time Hasbro was competing with a certain group of Ninja Turtles so there was a lot of bright neon colors and ninjas going on. Now, having said all that, YES it is worth your while to read the original comic series. As a whole, I think from issue 11 all the way to about 100, you will gain a whole new appreciation of the GIJoe franchise. Jason |

'80's kid here. I was & still am a huge fan of the G.I. Joe: ARAH comics that Marvel produced (1982-1994). In fact, I attest that the regular title & G.I. Joe: Special Missions were two of the best comic series ever made - and, I have read a lot of comics ;)
I'm very impressed by the "symbiotic relationship" that the Marvel comic had with the great Hasbro toyline; it was cool to read the comic & then get the figures/vehicles that were featured....or get the toys first & then read the comic(s) featuring them. Going along with this, also really enjoyed the cartoon TV ads for certain G.I. Joe Marvel issues, notably #1 & #11. Some of the more memorable comic book story-lines included: #1 - superb first issue that included the main story & a nice back-up story, "Hot Potato". This issue introduced G.I. Joe & Cobra, and featured great stories & fantastic artwork. Also notable was that this particular issue was printed on the then-relatively new high quality paper (as opposed to the regular cheap newsprint paper) which emphasized the great art & colors, etc. #2 - great issue that introduced the anti-hero "Kwinn the Eskimo". #11 - incredible issue that introduced a lot of new (at the time) characters, including Doc, Snow-Job, Gung-Ho, Airborne, Destro (though he wasn't seen fully), the cool Battle-Bear vehicle, etc. #21 - the "all silent" issue where Snake-Eyes infiltrated a Cobra fortress to rescue Scarlett. Featured the first appearances of Storm Shadow & the Cobra C.L.A.W. Excellent. #26-27 - the origin of Snake-Eyes; this delved into his service in Vietnam, his tragic past, and his connection(s) to Stalker, Scarlett, and Storm Shadow. -The multi-issue storyline in ARAH issues #61-#67 and Special Missions #6 when Stalker, Snow-Job, and Quick-kick got captured & put into a prison camp in a fictitious Eastern European?! country of Boravia, and have to be rescued. I will admit to "moving on" from ARAH toys & comics circa 1987, so only read the title through that summer. However, when I got back into comics in the 200X's/20XX's, I did buy & read all of the Collected Editions (CE's) of the original title & Special Missions - and read both series in their entirety re: these reprints. Add issue 10 ("A Nice Little Town...") to the highlights and keys. Really established Cobra and distinguished them from being the typical "80's toy-line bad guys". They didn't live in a scary battle station, creepy castle or mountain lair. They were hiding in plain sight, in suburban America.
It also has the first real glimpses of Snake-Eyes's background. Oh, and one of Hama's favorite plot-crutches, the Brainwave Scanner.

I have had the first two trades for years. I tried reading the first one, I did not care for it. I got about 3 issues in and found it pretty boring. I didn't feel the characters had much personality yet and there wasn't a 'wow' factor to keep me in. Conversely, what I've been able to get of DDP I really enjoyed, especially the one shots about Zanya and Stalker's family.
Reading this thread has made me want to go back and stick with Marvel till the issues called out here, 12 and 21, when it gets 'good'. Quite a lot to read till it sucks you in though. |
