ARAH #21 "Silent Interlude" is still my favorite issue of any comic, and got me hooked on the series for the following two or three years, until it started to fade from greatness. But I've been reading these in collected graphic novel form since I never finished the series, and I'm on volume 14 or 15, and can't recall ever seeing Crystal Ball. Was he never in the comic?

Definitely worth a read. To me they've always been the best thing about G.I. Joe.

The basic concept of Cobra and how they started (similar to an AMWAY pyramid marketing structure) is frickin' genius. There are a few references to the "soap men". Also loved how this scary EVIL terrorist organization is hiding in plain sight in the middle of America. To put those concepts into a supposed "kids' comic" is amazing. For this, I think issue 10 is probably the key issue to the entire series.

Crystal Ball has now shown up in the modern Hama ARAH comic. Larry wrote him as kind of full of himself and ineffectual, but he was legit running around with that hypno-shield using it on people.

In my headcanon Hama's Marvel G.I. Joe is more "real" than the filecards, cartoons, movie, or other comic books.
So if you are a Joe fan- even a young one- you have to read at least some of these. It is the best that Joe has ever been. G.I. Joe was just as fun as anything else Marvel (and DC) was putting out at the time. It did not feel like a regular army comic like Sgt. Rock and it wasn't as sci-fi/fantasy as S.H.I.E.L.D. It felt like it was a Marvel comic but not part of the MU, yet never felt like it was an outsider. I feel Larry Hama is UNDERRATED as a creator when it comes to Top 100 lists and creators who are often cited as being the top of their comic book craft. I also feel that G.I. Joe artists are severely underrated. It seemed like Jim Shooter assigned "reliable" or underpaid members of the Marvel Bullpen on the mag as opposed to the "hot" 1980s artists, but they all did better than expected. Herb Trimpe pumped out some of his best stuff and kickstarted everything. He was a great fit for the original 13 Joes. Mike Vosburg was even better. Michael Golden's covers were jaw-dropping, as were other guest cover artists. Even Rod Whigham had a style that fit the interiors. As others have said, the main storyarc kinda starts with #10. It jumped the shark around #100+ or whatever, but it wasn't Hama's fault. |

Absolutely worth reading for any Joe fan. They are great. I also recommend Special missions and the later DDP run.

Definitely, definitely read ‘em.
They’re a good open-ended, very long serial run and not a short, preplanned miniseries, so there’s not so much of the overarching unity that a single great story provides. You could say they’re more like Star Trek than Star Wars, for example, in that they’re a series of continuing adventures rather than a defined beginning/middle/end with a set structure. Or you could say they’re more like jazz than a standard song, a series of explorations of some basic themes rather than a foreordained exposition. But what you can’t say is that there isn’t some real art there. I do think it takes a bit of time to build, and gets less consistent (though not without its moments) toward the end, but it is entirely worth it from beginning to end. |

Shelly, Dickins, Steinbeck, and Hama. That’s all their is. Ok maybe Claremont too. In all seriousness, the Marvel Joe line was what got me into comics at the age of 7. In their hay day Joe outsold all of the superhero lines. Some of my best childhood memories and one of the best comic runs. Do yourself a favor and check them out.

Beyond the obvious "OF COURSE", I also second (third?) the Special Missions recommendation. I actually liked those more than the main series.
Personal favourite arc was the Cobra Civil War, with that amazing order of battle insert at the end of every issue featuring every Joe available at the time. As a nine-year-old, that was insane. Also note that, per Jim Shooter, Joe was Marvel's leading subscription title for years on end. It's been scrubbed from their history a bit, but Joe was more important to them than Spidey and the X-Men put together for a while there. Last edited by GeoffDes; 10-16-2018 at 10:19 PM.. |

They did it again for the summer of 1989, but by that time GI Joe's popularity had declined quite a bit and they didn't go bi-weekly. X-men, Spidey, Captain America and Wolverine did.
