Let's not build up too high expectations. It's good, but it's not watchmen or sandman.

Watchman is overrated and diluted thanks to DC rebirth. I never read Sandman, but aside from Batman I could give a shit less about DC and Thier let's reboot everything every 10 years and wonder why we are in second place on sales.

I was just discussing the 80's Marvel GI Joe comic with two young guys in the military (friends of a friend) about two weeks ago. One of the things I told them was how, re-reading the comic as an adult, subversive the comic was at times. I can't believe some of the themes that were discussed in a comic designed to help sell action figures.
SPOILERS!!! Look at what Cobra Commander says at this rally: There were lots of other examples. |

It is quite good. You can tell Hama was trying very, very hard to make it great. At times you can see him just straining that the limitations of the medium and the subject matter. He tries to incorporate real-world subject matter wherever possible, including Vietnam-era ambivalence, Cobra's pseudo-Marxist roots, and Bosnian-style ethnic conflict. At it's best, it is the equal of any other superhero comic published at the time.
...but it is not a great classic of Western literature, either. The first few issues are kind of bland. It really kicks into high gear around issue 21, and just gets better from there. Then once you get into the 1990's the stories get weaker and the art starts to ape Rob Liefeld, and it really peters out. It is definitely not on par with something like Sandman or Preacher, but worth reading nonetheless. |

II only saw the Sunbow series as a kid, so maybe I'm biased. I don't understand why so many have a hard on for the Marvel comics. I read the entire series last year and couldn't understand what was so great about. There is some good stuff sprinkled thoughout but there is also a lot of crap.
I assume the comic's target audience was 10-14 year olds (the cartoon was probably aimed at the 7-11 year old crowd, but I'm just guessing at those brackets), so the stories will not read the same to an adult . . . but there's stuff in there that you probably have to be an adult to get. Still, to me the good outweighed the bad and the comics remain my primary point of reference. |

The early half of the Marvel comics run are my all-time favorites! If you've never read them, you've been living on appetizers without the main course. I grew up reading a lot of superhero comics too, but GI Joe was by far the best. Even now, they're a gift that keeps on giving.

There is a ton of good stuff. Even the later stuff is pretty good, especially if you like the early 90's gonzo stuff.

There's a certain cheese to the Marvel run... but just keep in mind you're not reading Alan Moore's 80's "Swamp Thing" and you'll have a good time.
The basic concept of Cobra and how they started (similar to an AMWAY pyramid marketing structure) is frickin' genius. There are a few references to the "soap men". Also loved how this scary EVIL terrorist organization is hiding in plain sight in the middle of America. To put those concepts into a supposed "kids' comic" is amazing. For this, I think issue 10 is probably the key issue to the entire series. The Dreadnoks' rampant stupidity really pushes the believability envelope, later on. "Okay, Zartan, we'll get you some candy soon" (circa issue 45 and the whole Zartan/Ripcord switcheroo). The title does take a nose dive after the "Destro: Search and Destroy" arc, circa issue 122. The "Star Brigade" story from 144-147 is actually pretty enjoyable (the overall concept of that story bounced around and was eventually turned into the movie "Armageddon" in 1998). There will always be some groan-inducing scenes in any old comics, but there are usually more high points that are just plain fun. As a supplement, once you're finished, you can track down the 15 issues of Marvel's "GI Joe: European Missions". Yes, these are re-formatted "Action Force" comics, but some stories could fit into the US "Joe-verse".

ARAH #21 "Silent Interlude" is still my favorite issue of any comic, and got me hooked on the series for the following two or three years, until it started to fade from greatness. But I've been reading these in collected graphic novel form since I never finished the series, and I'm on volume 14 or 15, and can't recall ever seeing Crystal Ball. Was he never in the comic?
