#4 if the IDW GI Joe series is almost enough to make me stop reading this title...
First off, we're already 4 or more issues into it and not much has happened. The robot inside the PIT then spawning smaller ones seems familiar... oh wait, Marvel #3 has a similar story with one exception... the Marvel story ended in one issue. The end of issue 2 it has a pic of Snake Eyes with the caption "Next issue, Snake Eyes returns." I read issue 3 and if I'm wrong, then I'll admit it here, but WHERE THE HELL IS SNAKE EYES IN THIS ISSUE? Now the biggest problem... it's been mentioned before too, but it's when everyone calls each other their code names... but shortens them... started with Beachhead, Duke calls him "Beach" okay fine... Shipwreck = Ship? I dunno... But when I read everyone calling Tunnel Rat, just "Rat" I was like enough is enough... then Rat calls Scarlett "Scars" OMG!!! WTF!!! Scars???? That's it. I'm sticking with GI Joe Cobra, that's a great book. |

Yea, this is my least favorite book as well. It shouldn't take three issues for a robot to reach the surface of the pit. It has next to no plot advancement yet.

AMEN!!!
I'm so sick of the shorten code names. I think this started toward the end of the DDP series. Enough is enough, show some respect to these characters. |

I guess it didn't really bother me as I'm already used to the hockey players (I'm sure they do it in other sports too) I've been around all my life chopping short last names for nicknames. Maybe then adding a "y" or an "ie" to it.
Come to think of it, same thing happened back when I was in the Army too. Doesn't always sound right to a third party listener, but whatever saves a syllable or two I guess. I can bet you anything if my real last name was Carstein I would definitely heard "Cars" or "Steiny" walking through the motor pool and around the rink. Doesn't always sound the best, but it is was it is. Just my 2 cents. |

I don't mind the shortened names, it's how I talk anyways.
I never call anyone by their full name, Micheal is Mike, etc.. My best friend, it sounds odd to call him his full name, heck even his first name since I always call him by his last name and have since I've known him. The Scarlett to Scars one is a little weird, but the rest don't bother me at all. In the heat of battle, if you're going to yell out "Scarlett, look out" are you going to say it all or will you just shout "SCAR! LOOK OUT!" Tunnel Rat, are you going to say "Tunnel Rat! Look Out!" or would you say "RAT!! LOOK OUT!!"

My problem isn't with the shortening and abbreviation of the names. It's with the regularity of their usage and how unnatural they sound in the context of the dialogue. Name abbreviations sound natural when done with "proper" names, as a signifier of familiarity or affection (such as Troynos' example of Michael being shortened to "Mike" or Captain Carstein's example of Carstein being shortened to "Cars" or "Steiny"). When the same thing is applied with code names (which, in effect, are already "nicknames" to the extent that they are used within GI Joe dialogue), it sounds stilted and forced, and somewhat goofy, at least to me.

The name shortening doesn't bother me really (I'd prefer they didn't do it, but it doesn't bother me much) - What kills the book for me is the leaden pacing. NOTHING is happening and, as Xerofall said, Marvel #3 told the same story in a far more interesting way and in a single issue (and that was nearly 25 years ago).
Thing is though, this is what I said would probably happen well before I read a single issue. You only had to look at IDW's TRANSFORMERS comics to realise this. Only my 'collector' mentality is letting me carry on buying the title in the hope that is suddenly improves. Otherwise, I'm finding it virtually unreadable. Oh the irony: I remember the complaints about DDP's "Re-Instated" arc being 'too rushed' (and that was, at the time, just a mini-series and HAD to 'rush' some aspects!). Them were the days....

The ONLY cool action was Scourge transforming into a blimp. But after 4 issues, I was left feeling like the story didn't even warrant being told. |

Also, what happens if somebody decides to start calling Shipwreck "Wreck" instead of "Ship"?! "Duke, I have Wreck leading the naval assault" "What?! Where the hell's Ship?!"
