I have most of the entire run of Marvel G.I Joe comics. I had never read the original G.I Joe vrs Transformers mini series that the sdcc exclusives were based off of so I picked it up.... or atleast thought I did.
After the reading the series I thought it was quite good except some plotholes. 1. How did Optimus Die? 2. Did Megatron take a vacation and leave Shockwave in charge? Besides those questions I thought to myself the SDCC cross over line has nothing to do with the story. 1. SDCC Starscream Skystriker - Cobra commander was only in the first issue and had no dealings with Starscream. Starscream showed up in issue 4 for about 3 pages with the rest of the Seekers. He didn't even have any dialog. 2. Destro/Shockwave set - While Shockwave was a huge part of the story Destro wasn't even in it. It should of been Dr.Mindbender. 3. Jetfire/Houd/Baroness etc. - Ravage had speaking parts and Baroness was a big role in the series as well. Jetfire and Hound were not in the comic at all. Why not make the jet one of the aerial bots? Don't get me wrong I love these sets but they are such a departure from the source material. While the first exclusives had box art similar to original books the third box set had totally different art and artist. I guess what Im trying to say is I have issues with the continuity. They could of had the appropriate characters but I'm sure it would of cost more in production.(even though they already had a mindbender mold) |

Optimus allowed himself to be killed after he and Megatron played in a virtual reality game; he sacrificed innocent creatures to kill Megatron, basically. See #24 of the Marvel TF run. Megs was allegedly killed a short time later by the Predacons, that's why he doesn't show up. In terms of continuity, while many of the characters didn't show up, Hasbro likely went with the character with the most fan appeal. Jetfire and Starscream are the 2 most recognizable jets, plus Jetfire's original design is based on the F-14 Tomcat.

How is the TF stuff comparatively to the Joe books at the time? If they are even close to Hama's run I'll have to pick them up. |

the Transformers end of the mini is more connected to the main TF comic than the Joe end of it. but the mini takes place during the period where Cobra Commander was believed dead, along with Destro, in the collapse of the PIT, iirc. but the series had a major plot point for the Transformers comic, namely the destruction of Bumblebee and his rebirth as Goldbug, which was never explained in the main TF series. there's also something of an irony that Ratchet was involved in rebuilding him, as Ratchet later rebuilt the deactivated Goldbug as Bumblebee, tying into his Pretender Classic release, and outright said he preferred him as 'bee!
The Transformers comics from the US are decent, petering off in quality toward the end of Bob Budiansky's run, but pick up again when Simon Furman from the UK comics takes over. |

Yeah, there's nothing that happens in the miniseries that affects Joe continuity, although it reflects what's happening in the comic at the time. IIRC, the Joes started rebuilding 'bee and Ratchet came along later to finish the job. I know there's a reference to Optimus dying in the second issue, but I don't recall if it goes into the whole thing about who was going to take the reins of leadership.
