White pages?
Ask for a scan of the publishing information. In the old Joes it was usually on the splash page. It would say "first" or "second" edition in there usually.

The splash page is typically the first page, or the opening page which was one giant panel that was the whole page.
Nowadays, they really don't exist. I don't know of any difference between white spidey and black spidey. If you have one with a barcode that means it was bought at a newstand. The spideys mean direct market (comic specialty store). Edit: the white/black spidey depends on the year (I believe) that it was reprinted or published since Spidey went from his traditional costume to a pure black one.

And yeah, if there's any kind of logo instead of a barcode it's a direct market comic... later comics would say Direct Edition while still having a barcode.

White and Black Spidey typically mean that the book was originally sold in on the "direct only" market...or comic shops, as opposed to a newstand location. No difference, as the books are identical and have the same value.
But, keep in mind that Black Spidey didn't exist until 1984. An original "direct print" first print of early Joe comics (issues 1-24 from 1982 to 1984) would never have a Black Spidey on them. Sometimes you'll see a second, third or fourth, printing of an issue between 1 and 24 that has a Black Spidey on the cover. Clear indication that it's at least a second print. Above issue 24 or so, the Black Spidey also appeared on first prints.

This reminds me of the time all the comic book nerds where like, "Why does mine have no "M" on the white price/issue number? Is mine worth less? Noooooooooooooooooooooo!" |
