I was just thinking about the new IDW comic and how they're rebooting the whole G.I.Jow "mythology", I also read the 5 page preview of G.i.Joe orgins wherein Duke is being recruited by Hawk. That being said, I guess its follows that the "original 13" lineup that we all grew up with (Flash, Short Fuze, Stalker, Breaker etc) doesn't exist.
So I was just wondering, if you were in charge of rebooting the series, and you had ALL the joes to pick from, who would your new "original 13" be? Ok you don't necessarily have to have 13...any decent number would do. And it would be cool to hear your reasoning over your line-up aside from "they're my favorites". ha ha |

I don't care if it's a Squad, Platoon, Company, Battalion, Brigade or Division asset. IT MUST HAVE A SENIOR NCO!!!! That said, Duke is the 1SG for the GI Joe team, so I am fine with him being an original 14 greenshirt. COL Hawk is the CO, and 1SG Duke is the NCOIC. The rest of the Joe team follows the instructions of Duke, while Hawk maintains the Command. Think of the relationship between LTC Moore and CSM Plumley in "We Were Soldiers." That is the ideal relationship between a Commanding Officer and Senior NCO. |

Wasn't Stalker the NCOIC in the original comic?
Not mad at them for including Duke, but just curious. |

The original 13 may or may not exist in the new IDW-Joeverse. And I'd assume that it doesn't since issue #2 or #3 has Heavy Duty appearing in it (and please don't get started on the Heavy Duty vs Roadblock name debate, it's old, it's been changed, don't bring it up again).

Has it been confirmed that there are 13/14? If not, who says they can't have more or less? It is a reboot after all

My 13 starting Joes -
1 - General Hawk 2 - Flint (Hawk's XO) 3 - Lt. Falcon (field leader) 4 - Tunnel Rat (EOD) 5 - Beachhead (Special Ops - ranger) 6 - Torpedo (Special Ops - SEaL, and make him look like a SEaL and not a diver) 7 - Roadblock (heavy weapons) 8 - Clutch (vehicle driver) 9 - Backblast (anti-aircraft) 10- Scarlett (intelligence) 11- Stalker (Special Ops - Ranger) 12- Hit & Run (Special Ops - Mtn Trooper) 13- Recondo (Special Ops - Jungle Trooper) I think that's the best mix of what the Joes have and would need to function as a highly effective/covert operations group.

I am actually OK with incorporating Duke into the original 13 and calling it the original 14.
Here is why: Every Army unit MUST have a senior NCO. That being said, my original 13 would still be the original 13. I was actually working on a restructuring project a little bit ago, where the teams were broken down into Alpha, Bravo, Charlie, Delta, etc. teams mostly based on original release (ex: Alpha team - 1982, Bravo team - 1983, etc.). Now, this doesn't work out exact, so you need to juggle some around, but drawing on the Joes released from 1982-1994, ditching the ones I don't really care for, making sure that each team gets roughly the same amount of MOS types (it's tough with medics and radio specialists, so look at their secondary MOS - ex: Stalker is a medic). That's basically how I'd do it. Other Joes that I'd like to keep, but don't especially fit into this structure (like Sgt. Slaughter) would be part of a readiness training force. |

The problem with that approach is that (for example): Roadblock and Repeater are both Rangers/Machine Gunners, where Rock 'n Roll is regular army.
So an elite unit would have Roadblock or Repeater on their Alpha team.
