I heard about Valiant comics for the first time from listening to Ryan on Star Joes Podcast about a month ago. I am hooked. These are some of the best comics out there right now. I still have to read Harbinger and Shadowman.
What are your favorite of the five comics out right now by Valiant? I love the following in order (I still have to read Harbinger and Shadowman): 1. Archer & Armstrong 2. X-O Manowar 3. Bloodshot

Valiant, when first launched in the late 80s/early 90s, was considered some of the best books on the market. Some corporate issues and growing too big led to their downfall.
The current Valiant books are all great.

I did not know too much about the earlier Valiant. There are a lot of excellent stories that are missed out on pre Unity. I am also impressed by the many video games that have used Valiant characters.

I am finally caught up on all issues of Archer & Armstrong, X-O Manowar, Bloodshot & Harbinger. I am really liking the Valiant Universe so far. I still have to read Shadowman still. Is it good?

I've been reading for the past couple of years. And holy cow, you must check out the current valiant universe. There's a lot for Gijoe fans to appreciate.

Valiant was brilliant when it launched in the early '90s. It was Jim Shooter's baby, the editor-in-chief who ran Marvel during arguably its best years in the late 70s to late 80s. I read most of the Valiant issues back then and they were fantastic, especially X-O Manowar, Harbinger, Archer & Armstrong and Solar. I wasn't as crazy about the future books, Magnus and Rai. But when they all came together in Unity it was fantastic. The whole company was an absolute phenomenon, rocketing from indie obscurity into a top bestseller to rival DC and Marvel within less than 2 years, with back issues rocketing in price to huge levels and sales of new #1 issues like Turok hitting #1 in the charts. The investors who funded the company forced Jim Shooter out within a couple years of starting so they could sell the company and keep all the profits for themselves, and the quality of the comics dropped like a rock soon after that. It's been relaunched 2 or 3 times since then and I haven't read the relaunches. But the quality of their storytelling was second-to-none back in those first couple of years thanks almost solely to Jim Shooter who micro-managed every title, right down to pencilling issues himself under a pseudonym when they couldn't secure an artist.
The one odd thing about the current relaunch is that they don't include core Valiant characters Magnus, Solar or Turok, because those characters were vintage Gold Key Comics characters under license by Valiant. |

That's due to the rights issue, those characters were licensed back in the day. They have created some replacements like Divinity.
