Alright, let's jump into this baby that was causing heated forum discussion before it was even out--
There are quite a few Joes seen in large roles, and a couple in the background. Joes- Duke Beachhead Scarlett Snake Eyes Dial Tone- Megs YES, SHE'S A WOMAN Shipwreck Torpedo Deep Six Clutch (Effectively a cameo) Hawk Snake Eyes Frostbite (not in usual garb) Dusty (not in usual garb) Airtight (not in usual garb) Issue starts off with an attack on a boat, presumably by the cargo. What, based on electronic word balloons and a POV of a red sensor, maybe some a ROBOT SOLDIER (oh come on, what else could this be) takes out the crew. Flashforward to a discussion between the jogging Beachhead and Duke about their lives in Joe and the mission from issue 0. Beachhead doesn't remember much of regular life, but Duke does. The two pass a hologram soldier to enter the pit, a MASSIVE underground CITY. Yes, city, check out the preview posted by Troynos (I believe). There, Duke is summoned by Scarlett, who is in a monitoring room, watching Shipwreck, Deep Six and Torpedo (Shipwreck is in charge of the group) search the remains of the cargo ship from earlier. On orders from Hawk, the trio salvage what they can. Afterwords, Hawk orders Duke and Scarlett to check up on this "Cobra" they've been hearing about. There seems to be some hesitance on Duke's part about working with Scarlett. Duke mentions Snake Eyes should be there, as he enjoys this kind of Op (POSSIBLY DISPELLING RUMORS THAT SE IS NOT PART OF THE TEAM IN FULL-STATUS). This segways to the scene from the Wizard preview, in which a gun-runner is killed by an assassin who appears (THROUGH TELEPORTATION...?) The assassin kills the body guards, but before he finishes the boss, he "melts" into a pile of purple goo. SE shows up in time to investigate, and sends a vial of the remains of the assassin and one of his guns to Scarlett, who discusses the gun with Dial Tone. Dusty interrupts to to inform Scarlett that the sea team has returned with their salvage, and Dusty, Airtight, Frostbite and Duke inspect the freight along with Scarlett. As Scarlett and Duke exchange unpleasant words, Dusty, Frostbite and Airtight comment on "Their drama", but then notice a humming sound... The same humming sound that was the precursor to the attack on the boat, and we again see the presumably electronic view of the Joes this time. The last panel hints that someone is watching, though this could be security cameras in the pit (doubtful, though, due to the tone of the ending). There is an ad for the Baroness appearing in the next Issue (which we already knew about), as well as ads for Origins and Cobra, out in Feb and March, respectively. Not a bad first start, honestly. Some people are not going to be happy with a few changes- Dial Tone's a woman, Scarlett and Duke have a history, Dusty and Frostbite aren't in their specialty, so to speak (granted, this can obviously change) and many favorite Joes have yet to punch in, including Flint, Lady Jaye, Roadblock, Gung Ho and others. This is a first issue though, so that's to be expected. It's not bad, though. the covers are pretty cool, with some noticable ones being the 2 Page Spread ad that I've been drooling over, and some awesome Incentives, like a Cobra version of the Marvel Trade 1, and a new version of the Silent Issue cover. The writing is decent, though admittedly "choppy" at rare times, but there is genuine wit there, and there is a lot of storylines there in a pretty good first issue. In my personal opinion, it's not a bad start. There are some things that are touched on VERY BRIEFLY, maybe leaving the ready to wonder "wait, what? What does that mean?", but this is a first issue, so we just have to be patient. Prime examples of this are Beachhead and Duke/Scarlett's past, which are not completely explained. There's definitely a lot to be filled in, but seeing how this it the first issue, and we still have Origins coming, this is not a fair complaint, just something I noted. You can definitely tell there's more to the story, which is a good thing. Absolutely no one with a Cobra "insignia" makes an appearance, which is a welcome twist, as this is a slow reveal, and it's working. You want to see what these Cobra's are capable of, and if someone doesn't die in the next issue with what is hinted to be an attack on the Pit next issue (perhaps not intentionally, as it seems the freight is attacking, so... Hey, it's a first issue, there are lots of possibilities, I'm just trying to list them), I'll be disappointed. It is likely that the "dust assassin" is a Cobra, and if the automated attackers aren't Cobra related, it's a "WTF" moment. THERE IS A LOT OF POTENTIAL HERE, AND IT'S A PRETTY GOOD FIRST ISSUE. I'd rate it a decent B-. recommended reading, to be sure. |

Maybe Scarlett dumped Duke for Snake-Eyes?

haha, that'd be an interesting change from the cartoon of old, huh?
No prob. I WOULD like to add a few personal notes. The art... A very mixed bag. Hawk, Snake Eyes both look great, as does the Pit and the various vehicles, but certain close ups and the art during conversations somehow lags. And there are plenty of moments when the eyes look wonky as all beat hell. Still, it's not a bad issue. I saw three other people pick it up after me in the 2 minutes I was at my local comic store. |

Unfortunately, I was not impressed with the extended preview. I thought the art was marginal at times and did not represent the team or vehicles all that well. I really have no desire to run around trying to find a place to pick this comic up, especially for $4 a pop. And there's no way I'd subscribe for like $6 an issue.
I'm sure I'll get the jist of what's happening here on the 'Tank anyway. |

What was Clutch's cameo? I ask 'cause he's my fave Joe-- the presence of Clutch may be the deciding factor of whether or not I buy this series.

I'm sure I'll get the jist of what's happening here on the 'Tank anyway. I didnt like the Scarlett Duke thing going on, but if she dumped him for SE I'm happy Dial-Tone is a woman?! WTF?!?!?!?! Not cool.... I will say, the PIT looks cool! I like the over all story going on and they have a lot that can be developed. Over all, it's not bad, but to me it's not worth the money yet. The art was ok (the comic I got has some "fuzzy" pages in it, but I'm a reader so it's ok I guess).... Oh yeah... I got cover "C"... I liked that one the best and I dont have the money nor the space for all of them....

I want to pick it up. I loved what I read in the previews and the reviews only make me hungry to read it all.
Seems like the same tone as the original Marvel series. And I am so glad that there's no Scarlet/Snake-Eyes and that Snake-Eyes won't be a focal point (which Dixon in an interview said would be the case, said that SE is a much better character when used sparingly, and I agree). I always hated the Scarlett/SE "romance".

It was alright. I would give it a B. It's a first issue, and not a lot happened.

Why would he be wearing arctic gear in an underground base in the middle of the desert? I like that they're shown "out of uniform". That always bothered me in the cartoons. Saw Arise Serpentor Arise and Iceberg is doing exercises and running around the jungle in his acrtic gear. WTF?!?
